Unique Education iPad App Launches in US for Grades K-12 ...

(PRWEB) July 07, 2011

A Paris-based startup, eduPad, has designed a unique technology that enables anyone to publish collections of interactive exercises to tactile learning apps for iPad. eduPad provides simple ways to integrate existing educational activities into popular handheld devices via web interfaces and/or file transfers. The standardized process requires no development, no upfront costs, and its attractive business models range from technology licensing to revenue sharing.

The eduPad solution is currently available for iPad. Android, iPod Touch, and iPhone versions will be released soon and will be included in the basic platform for publishers.

Each eduPad module covers one subject for one school year. eduPad apps typically gather between 1,500 and 6,000 exercises, creating by far the largest educational database in the Apple App Store. The exercises are stored on a local database on the device, resulting in an app that doesnt require an Internet connection and can be used anywhere ? especially in class. This independent functionality eliminates concerns over network issues, one of teachers most frequently cited and practiced reasons not to use IT technology in the classroom. Reference content is instead stored on cloud servers and synched with the apps on mobile devices in the background whenever an Internet connection is available, thus guaranteeing that the apps content is always up to date.

The eduPad solution includes advanced game dynamics and links to social networks, making the apps attractive and engaging to children and students.

eduPad has released 6 apps for iPad under its creative iTooch brand, available now in the App Store. ?We?re thrilled with the feedback we?ve received so far, especially from children, says eduPad.com co-founder J

(AP) ? Grappling with severe fuel shortages and winter temperatures that drop below freezing, Syrians are spending hours in line every day for gasoline or a few loaves of bread at soaring prices as President Bashar Assad's regime faces mounting difficulties in providing basic services to its people.

Syria's economy is buckling under the twin strains of violence and sanctions that have sapped the government's finances, devastated the nation's cities and left its industry and infrastructure in ruins. A power outage on Monday plunged Damascus and large swathes of the country's south into darkness, providing a stark reminder of how serious the regime's challenges are to keep the economy moving ? and its people fed and warm.

With the fighting settling into a bloody stalemate that looks likely to grind on for months, if not longer, the government's inability to provide basic services is likely to fuel frustration and anger with Assad, even from supporters who are deeply distrustful of the rebels fighting to topple him.

Monday's electricity blackout, which affected upscale areas in the heart of Damascus where rationing is normally less severe, was the latest in a series of infrastructural failures that the regime has blamed on the rebels. Late last year, the Internet and most telephone lines were cut for days as the regime and rebels traded blame. And over the year, the country's oil and gas pipelines, power stations and water pipes have all been attacked.

While Damascus's 2.5 million residents have grown used to frequent power cuts, this week's outage was the first to darken the entire capital since the conflict began in March 2011.

The winter months have brought misery and suffering to new levels, as the scarcity of food and fuel have meant people queuing for hours in cold weather for the most basic essentials, and others freezing inside their homes. In the countryside, people have resorted to chopping down trees and burning furniture to make fires to keep warm.

On a recent day in the poor Damascus neighborhood of Rukneddine, more than a 100 people stood outside al-Ameed bakery waiting to get 1.35 kilograms (3 pounds) of subsidized bread for 15 pounds (16 cents). Nowadays, Syrians can choose between subsidized bread or standard bread known as "touristic," which is abundant but four times more expensive than the subsidized.

With the economy in tatters and work hard to come by as the war grinds on, many families don't have the deep pockets for anything other than the cheapest option. One woman said she waited for four hours to get a pack of subsidized bread.

"I can't afford to pay more than that. My children need every penny," she said, requesting anonymity for fear of reprisals. Wearing a Muslim scarf around her head, the woman said she recently starting working as a cleaning lady to help raise her kids after her husband was killed by a shell last year.

The economic crisis has meant many children are dropping out of school to help their family make ends meet.

Yaman, a 12-year-old boy, quit school after his father was killed and his mother wounded when their home in the Damascus suburb of Douma was hit by a shell. He now makes a living standing in line to get bread, then selling the flat, round loaves to people who don't want to queue.

"Those who don't want to pay the high prices can go and stand in line," said Yaman, dressed in blue jeans, a shirt and flip flops on a cold January day as he held five packs of bread.

"I am not greedy," Yaman said, adding that he was now the only working member in the family. "I only do this for my family."

The government has fixed gasoline prices at about 75 cents per liter, but shortages mean residents must wait up to six hours in lines to fill up.

"There is almost no diesel in the city," said a taxi driver named Wael, who gave only his first name for security reasons.

He gets to the gas station around 6 a.m. and often waits until noon to fill up. Even then, the gas is rationed by the government to no more than 20 liters (5.2 gallons) per person ? meaning he'll have to return the following morning around dawn to wait in line again.

"I hate my job," he said. "I've been trying to find a new one but I can't. How am I supposed to feed my kids?"

Cooking gas, too, has become a precious commodity, and people must wait more than two weeks to replace an empty bottle at the government rate of about $7 or pay as much as four times that on the black market.

"The situation is catastrophic in most of Syria," said Dubai-based Syrian economist Samir Seifan. "The economy is paralyzed. Whole sectors are paralyzed, especially the industrial sector."

Despite the ravaged economy, most analysts say the regime can survive for at least another year at current levels of spending, and perhaps even longer.

Seifan said one reason is the assistance that the regime reportedly is getting from its main regional ally, Iran, which has allegedly provided billions of dollars since the crisis began in March 2011.

"If this assistance stops, there will be an economic collapse," Seifan said.

U.S. and European Union bans on oil imports, which went into effect last year, are estimated to be costing Syria about $400 million a month.

Before the uprising, the oil sector was a pillar of Syria's economy, with exports ? mostly to Europe ? bringing in $7 million to $8 million per day.

This income was a key to maintaining the $17 billion in foreign currency reserves that the government had accumulated from a brief oil boom in the 1990s and maintained until last year. The government has not said what currency reserves it has left, but the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit estimates it to be a little more than $4.5 billion.

Earlier this month, the London-based Business Monitor International said it has revised the 2012 and 2013 real GDP growth forecasts in Syria and projects a contraction of 7.8 percent in 2012 and 3.4 percent in 2013, compared to its previous forecasts of a contraction of 7.1 percent and 2.6 percent 2012 and 2013, respectively.

The U.S. dollar today costs about 95 pounds at the black market compared with 47 pounds to the dollar when the crisis began. The government price is about 79 pounds.

For most of the residents of Damascus, which has yet to see the daily gun battles and shelling of other Syrian cities, the power cuts and fuel shortages are the most frequent reminder of the war that has engulfed much of the rest of their country.

Still, the situation in government-controlled areas is much better than in territories held by rebels.

The situation is markedly worse in the suburbs ringing the capital, some of which are controlled by the opposition and are frequent sites of clashes between rebels and regime troops as well as frequent targets of government airstrikes. Some of these areas have had no electricity for months and have only black-market gas driven in from elsewhere.

But whether in Aleppo or Damascus or the capital's suburbs, Syrians are weary of the strain of a conflict that has killed more than 60,000 people.

"Until when will this go on?" said Saeed, a taxi driver from Damascus. "Death is more merciful than living like this."

Egypt police, protesters clash over uprising court case

CAIRO (Reuters) - Police and protesters clashed in the port city of Alexandria on Sunday after a judge investigating the killing of protesters in Egypt's 2011 uprising said he was transferring the case to another court, a court source and a Reuters witness said.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs wanted the court to consider the report of a fact-finding committee investigating the case against six police officers accused of killing unarmed protesters during the 18-day uprising before proceeding with the defendants' hearings.

Tensions are rising ahead of the second anniversary of the 2011 uprising due on January 25, the date of the first day of the demonstrations, which is expected to trigger protests against new President Mohamed Mursi and his Islamist allies.

After a heated argument with the lawyers, the Alexandria Criminal Court judge adjourned the session and said he was transferring the case to the city's appeals court.

Families watching the proceedings on court television in an adjacent hall erupted in anger and fought with police, who beat them back with batons, the witness said.

"The people want to bring down the regime" and "the people want to cleanse the judiciary," the protesters chanted.

Clashes continued outside the courtroom after the police drove them out.

Police fired tear gas and one police car was shown in video footage ramming into a protester in a scene reminiscent of the violent clashes in 2011.

Two police cars were set on fire, the witness said. Security forces detained some protesters, the state news agency MENA said, and dozens of people were injured.

"The interior ministry has not changed. They are thugs!" chanted the protesters outside the court.

Unidentified assailants raided the court after the clashes and set fire to legal papers and documents inside, MENA said.

After years of upheaval, many Egyptians - from the capital Cairo to smaller towns across the country - feel that discontent could again explode into a new wave of unrest.

The economy has been in tatters since the revolt and many say they have yet to see justice dispensed for the deaths of friends and relatives during the uprising as well as the 16-month rule of the army between the ouster of former leader Hosni Mubarak and the election of Mursi.

Frustration with Mursi is rising, with many saying that nothing has changed since he was elected in last June. Disagreements over a new national constitution late last year triggered violent protests, further eroding trust in his government.

Text-based gaming making a smartphone comeback

Text-based video games were all the rage during the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, partly due to low processing power on people?s PCs. Despite processing power increasing dramatically, there are still people out there creating these games, as there?s something quite charming about them. One such game, Wizard?s Choice, is available on your Nokia Lumia.

There are probably a lot of you out there who have never played a text-based game before, and instead rely on visual graphics to stimulate your senses. Text-based games ignite the brain in different ways and force your mind to conjure up your own images using nothing but good old-fashioned imagination ? much like reading a book. This provides a different gaming-experience to each and every person who plays it.

?An arrow whistles past your head. You look back and see at least four sets of glowing eyes.?

?What do you do??

Wizard?s Choice?is full to the brim of such questions, and it?s up to you to answer correctly or the nasties in the game will soon ?end? you and you?ll need to start all over again.

As the title suggests, you are a Wizard and you?re on a quest to rid the world of evil and collect treasure along the way. I?m sure there?s a fair maiden that needs rescuing thrown in for good measure, too.

Forest Decisions

The story begins in a forest as night begins to fall. Woods can be a frightening place, especially with orcs tailing your every move ? it?s the stench and glowing eyes that give them away. How best to deal with such malodorous beasts? Stay and fight, run and hide, or leg it? All are viable options.

However, whatever decision you make will have consequences for the rest of the game. If you make the wrong decision, you may feel the sharp, burning head of an enemy arrow, losing some of your precious health points.

If you opt to use your magic to escape a situation, your manna points will be reduced, and a wizard with no manna is almost as useless as a warrior without a sword.

Use your skills wisely, and sensibly.

Throughout your journey are moments to earn morale for your fighting party and even the opportunity to earn some money. Orc ears make a tidy profit on the black-market, apparently.

The storyline is descriptive and often funny. Both of which is perfect material for allowing your own mind to create the scene. Having said that, there is the odd scattering of illustrations to help you visualise this mysterious world.

Illustration Game-over

As for the gameplay, it doesn?t get much easier. Once you?ve read the story on each page, your only task is to select what to do next and press the relevant button.

Don?t worry about saving your progress, the game autosaves at every step on the way. When you load up the game in future, you?ll be taken to the exact same point you left off.

Wizard?s Choice?is gaming from the past, delivered beautifully to open-minded gamers and into the modern world of smartphones.

Available on Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900. Download it for free, today. Paid options allow you to avoid the adverts.

Do you remember text-based gaming the first time around? Or are you trying this for the firs time? Let us know, below.

CES 2013: Wilson Electronics introduces the Sleek 4G booster to get your iPhone more signal

Wilson Electronics has been making cell phone signal boosters for a while now, both for home use and for larger scale settings like offices and commercial use. But the company is turning to something more personal with its new Sleek 4G cell phone booster, which is a phone stand that will make your iPhone's signal (or a signal from any phone, really) up to ten times more powerful.

The booster, which is shipping next week, basically consists of a phone stand that you can either place on your desk or stick on your car's dashboard, and then a cord leading off of it that connects to an antenna with a magnetic base. That's it -- you don't need to actually connect your phone up at all, because the stand will just grab the signal automatically.

The stand itself has a few different prongs on the sides that you can adjust depending on what phone you're using, but other than that, it just boosts a signal, and well. A normal phone signal, according to Wilson, runs at about 200 mW, but with the Sleek 4G adding a boost, the signal can reach up to 2000 mW.

Wilson's reps told us that most people think of using cell phone boosters out in more rural areas, but given all of the holes and issues in more populated areas, it can be helpful in bigger cities, too. And the booster has one other big benefit: It'll increase the battery life on the phone. By making sure the signal is always strong, Wilson says that many users have seen phones last longer than before.

At $199, this isn't a small investment for sure. But if you constantly have problems with your iPhone's signal and could use a way to keep it going whether you're in a home or office or out and about in your car, Wilson's Sleek 4G booster could help.

Simulated mission to Mars reveals critical data about sleep needs for astronauts

    Tuesday, January 8, 2013

In the first study of its kind, a team of researchers led by faculty at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the Baylor College of Medicine, has analyzed data on the impact of prolonged operational confinement on sleep, performance, and mood in astronauts from a groundbreaking international effort to simulate a 520-day space mission to Mars. The findings, published online-first in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed alterations of life-sustaining sleep patterns and neurobehavioral consequences for crew members that must be addressed for successful adaption to prolonged space missions.

"The success of human interplanetary spaceflight, which is anticipated to be in this century, will depend on the ability of astronauts to remain confined and isolated from Earth much longer than previous missions or simulations," said David F. Dinges, PhD, professor and chief, Division of Sleep and Chronobiology in the Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine, and co-lead author of the new study. "This is the first investigation to pinpoint the crucial role that sleep-wake cycles will play in extended space missions."

The 520-day simulation, which was developed by the Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and sponsored in part by the European Space Agency (ESA), was initiated on June 3, 2010 when the hatches were closed on a 550-cubic-meter IBMP spacecraft-like confinement facility in Russia. The simulated mission, involving an international, six-man team of volunteers, involved more than 90 experiments and realistic scenarios to gather valuable psychological and medical data on the effects of a long-term deep space flight. The 520-day mission was broken into three phases: 250 days for the trip to Mars, 30 days on the surface, and 240 days for the return to Earth.

As the only U.S. research team involved with the Mars 520-day simulation, the study authors monitored the crew's rest-activity patterns, and performance and psychological responses to determine the extent to which sleep loss, fatigue, stress, mood changes and conflicts occurred during the mission.

Measurements included continuous recordings of body movements using wrist actigraphy (a noninvasive means of estimating sleep and movement intensity), and light exposure and weekly computer-based neurobehavioral assessments to identify changes in the crew's activity levels, sleep quantity and quality, sleep?wake intervals, alertness performance, and workload throughout the 17 months of mission confinement.

Data from the actigraph devices revealed that crew sedentariness increased across the mission, as illustrated by decreased waking movement and increased sleep and rest times. The majority of crewmembers also experienced one or more disturbances of sleep quality, alertness deficits, or altered sleep?wake intervals and timing, suggesting inadequate circadian synchronization.

"Taken together, these measurements point to the need to identify markers of differential vulnerability to abnormal decrease in muscular movement and sleep? wake changes in crew members during the prolonged isolation of exploration spaceflight and the need to ensure maintenance of the Earth's natural circadian rhythm, sleep quantity and quality, and optimal activity levels during exploration missions," said Mathias Basner, MD, PhD, MSc, assistant professor of Sleep and Chronobiology in Psychiatry at Penn and co-lead author.

The research team concludes that successful adaptation to such missions will require crews to transit in spacecraft and live in surface habitats that artificially mimic aspects of Earth's sleep-wake activity cycles, such as appropriately timed light exposure, food intake, and exercise. This dynamic will be necessary to maintain neurocognition and human behavior throughout the flight.

The findings also have implications for the increasing prevalence of sleep and circadian rhythm disorders in mainstream society. The research team notes that many people in industrialized societies exist with sedentary lifestyles, prolonged artificial light exposure, and disruptions in healthy sleep patterns due to education and work schedules, leading to other comorbid health conditions such as obesity.

"A takeaway message from this line of research is the life-sustaining importance that healthy sleep duration and timing plays for everyone," Dinges said. "As a global society, we need to reevaluate how we view sleep as it relates to our overall health and ability to lead productive lives. Whether it is an astronaut being challenged to reach another planet or a newborn baby just learning to walk, the human body's need for sleep is as essential as our need for food and water and integral to our ability to thrive."

Debbi Morgan Returning To 'All My Children' For Online Revival

Debbi Morgan is returning to "All My Children." The actress announced she was reprising her role of Dr. Angie Hubbard when "All My Children" is resurrected online.

In January 2013, Prospect Park announced both "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" would be revived via The Online Network after ABC canceled the soaps and original plans to move the soaps online failed in late 2011.

"We thank the loyal audience and new generation of fans of both shows who have demonstrated that passion and exciting story lines are not just reserved for traditional television," Jeff Kwatinetz and Rich Frank of Prospect Park said in a statement. "Their enduring support encouraged us to move forward each and every day. We look forward to sharing more details including our launch air date and additional specifics in the coming weeks."

    Debbi Morgan

Ok, I can finally announce how thrilled I am 2 B on board w/the "All My Children" re-boot & Prospect Park! Agnes Nixon, you're my HERO!!!

Morgan joins Vincent Irizarry in returning to "All My Children." Irizarry announced his return in late December 2012. "Happy to share that I just signed on with Prospect Park for the 'All My Children' reboot! Excited to bring dastardly Dr. David back to life, as he did for so many others, and to see my dear friends in Pine Valley once again," Irizarry wrote on his Facebook.

    Cameron Mathison

4 those asking, I'm not sure if I'll be part of the new AMC. I'm lucky to be working these days, so I'm working on the scheduling:) Hope so!

Look for other casting announcements to be made as the shows get ready to begin production in February 2013. No word on whether Susan Lucci -- who is currently starring in Lifetime's "Devious Maids" -- or Erika Slezak will reprise their iconic soaps on "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," respectively.

    • Tina Fey & Amy Poehler Hosting The Golden Globes

      Because ... duh.

    • The Return Of "Arrested Development"

After years of rumors, it's finally happening this spring. The Bluths will be back and all will be right with the world ... of TV.

    • "The Following"

By far one of the most entertaining of the 2012-2013 pilots, we can't wait to be creeped out by James Purefoy and have the day (hopefully) saved by Kevin Bacon on a weekly basis.

    • Jennifer Hudson On "Smash"

How do you spice up a musical? Add an Oscar winner with a killer voice. "Smash" is already filled to the brim with talent, but adding Hudson's show-stopping voice to the mix really ups the ante.

    • "The Carrie Diaries"

Once you get over the initial balking at a "Sex And The City" prequel series, "The Carrie Diaries" is a pretty well done pilot. Cool music and performances that blow pretty much every other CW show out of the water make this show one we've got an eye on.

    • Return of "Community"

The Greendale Human Beings have been gone way too long. The series is basically the Rodney Dangerfield of NBC: it can't get no respect. Now that it's finally on the schedule (February 7 at 8 p.m. EST!), we can't wait to see what "Community" has to offer under the guidance of new showrunners. All the headlines and departure news have just added to the anticipation.

    • Mariah Carey & Nicki Minaj On "American Idol"

Whether they're feuding or not talking to each other, we're excited to see these two divas on screen together. Can Keith Urban keep the peace?

    • "Girls" Guest Stars

The exploits of Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna and Jessa are enough to bring us back for Season 2, but when you add guest stars like Donald Glover, Rita Wilson, Patrick Wilson, Colin Quinn and Shiri Appleby, the "Girls" game has been raised.

    • The End of "Breaking Bad"

OK, so we don't really want "Breaking Bad" to end, but man we are looking forward to seeing how Walter White's evolution ends.

    • New "Cougar Town"

You can't keep a good show down. Thanks to the execs at TBS, "Cougar Town" lived to see another day and finish off hundreds of bottles of wine.

    • "Game Of Thrones" Season 3

As if we weren't looking forward to returning to Westeros and Essos already, Season 3 is based on "A Storm of Swords," one of the best George R. R. Martin books. Add some exciting new cast members -- Diana Rigg and Iwan Rheon to name a few -- and March can't come soon enough.

    • A World Without "Jersey Shore"

Our long national nightmare is over! Sort of. There are still spinoffs, and JWoww is headed to Fox's celebrity diving show. Not to mention the premiere MTV's "Jersey Shore" replacement "Buckwild." So the "Shore" legacy lives on ... for better or worse.

    • "Girl Meets World"

Cory and Topanga, together again! Technically this pilot is still in development, but given the buzz it's created, we're 99 percent sure Disney will go through with this "Boy Meets World" sequel series.

    Samsung sees record-high 4Q profit

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest technology company by revenue, expects record earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012 as shoppers continued to snap up its smartphones and tablets.

The company said Tuesday its operating profit for the October-December quarter would be about 8.8 trillion won ($8.3 billion), up 89 percent from a year earlier and higher than expectations. It will release its full quarterly result including net profit at the end of this month.

The maker of Galaxy smartphones and tablets said fourth quarter revenue likely rose 18 percent from a year earlier to 56 trillion won.

Analysts said nearly 70 percent of the operating income for the quarter was likely generated by Samsung's mobile division that makes and sells smartphones and tablets.

Samsung's mobile business, which recently overtook Apple in smartphone sales and Nokia in mobile handsets, has driven Samsung's earnings growth in recent quarters. Samsung's quarterly operating profit has risen steadily since the final quarter of 2011, while rival mobile-phone makers such as Nokia, Research In Motion and HTC have experienced falling market share and profits.

Samsung shipped at least 60 million smartphones in the last quarter of 2012, according to analysts' estimates, about 10 percent growth from the previous quarter.

The launch in September of the Galaxy Note II, a giant smartphone with a 5.5-inch screen and a digital pen, helped Samsung retain its market dominance during the Christmas holiday season despite competition from Apple's iPhone 5, analysts said. Samsung's flagship Android device, the Galaxy S III, also sold strongly.

Jin Sung-hye, an analyst at KTB Securities, estimated Samsung shipped 15 million S III smartphones and 7 million of the Note II during the final three months of 2012. The surprise popularity of the Note II device prompted other handset makers to increase the screen size of their smartphones as consumers embrace a wider mobile-phone screen to watch videos.

Market watchers speculate that Samsung will introduce a new Galaxy S smartphone, likely to be named the Galaxy S IV, before the end of April. Samsung usually rolls out the latest iteration of its Android-based flagship smartphone before the end of the second quarter, taking advantage of the time when rivals are months away from introducing new smartphone models.

With the early rollouts of the new Galaxy S model and an update to the Note series later in the year, analysts predict Samsung will sell at least 300 million smartphones in 2013, widening its lead over Apple. Samsung's smartphone shipments likely surpassed 200 million for the first time in 2012.

The company plans to act more aggressively to increase its share of the tablet PC market this year, which is still dominated by Apple's iPad, its executives said in an October conference call. The release of mini tablets that are between the size of smartphones and standard tablets also opens up a new growth area for Samsung.

While the mobile phone division has replaced Samsung's semiconductor business as the biggest profit generator, robust demand for smartphones around the world is benefiting Samsung's semiconductor operation as well. The company is the world's largest supplier of TVs and memory chips.

Analysts said Samsung's semiconductor division fared better in the last quarter than the quarter before as higher Samsung phone sales and launches of new mobile products by its customers lifted demand for Samsung's mobile processors.

In the first quarter of this year, market watchers said the strengthening of the South Korean currency against the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen could hurt Samsung's component businesses, which is facing seasonally weak demand for TVs and display panels. But others predict Samsung will ship more smartphones than the previous quarter, which could outweigh lower TV and panel sales.

The South Korean company has been in global legal battles with Apple, one of its biggest clients, for nearly two years. Last month, Samsung dropped its bid to seek a sales ban against Apple's mobile products in Europe, saying it would like to protect consumer choice. Samsung, which is under investigations by the European Commission over its practice of licensing key mobile patents, is maintaining its lawsuits against the iPhone maker in other countries.

Shares of Samsung Electronics fell 1 percent in Seoul after earnings release. Samsung's shares, which gained 11 percent in the fourth quarter, hit a record high level earlier this month.

If Samsung's fourth quarter results are in line with Tuesday's guidance, the company will report 29 trillion won ($27.3 billion) operating profit on revenue of 201.1 trillion won ($189 billion) for 2012.

    University of Manchester

Scientists at The University of Manchester have developed a camera that can be used to take powerful three dimensional colour X-ray images, in near real-time, without the need for a synchrotron X-ray source.

Its ability to identify the composition of the scanned object could radically improve security screening at airports, medical imaging, aircraft maintenance, industrial inspection and geophysical exploration.

The X-Ray system developed by Professor Robert Cernik and colleagues from The School of Materials can identify chemicals and compounds such as cocaine, semtex, precious metals or radioactive materials even when they're contained inside a relatively large object like a suitcase.

The method could also be extended to detect strain in fabricated components, for example in aircraft wings, and it can be used to image corrosion processes and chemical changes.

In healthcare, the system can be used to detect abnormal tissue types from biopsy samples. In geophysical exploration it could be used to quickly analyse the content of core samples taken from bore holes.

In a recent experiment the team used the technology to X-ray a USB dongle that controls webcams. They were able to identify the different elements and components inside the dongle by analysing the energy sensitive radiographs and fluorescence patterns. The elements or components were highlighted in different colours to clearly identify them to the system operators. In this case the X-ray showed bromine, barium, silver, tin and zirconium.

The results of the tests have been published in the journal Analyst.

Professor Robert Cernik says: "The fact that we can now use this technology in a laboratory setting is a substantial step forward. When we first developed the idea five years ago we needed the power of a synchrotron to produce the X-Rays. In addition we only had access to silicon based detectors. This is a problem because silicon is a light atom and will not stop the high energy X-rays that come through large objects. Now we can achieve the same imaging results with an 80 x 80 pixel camera (made from cadmium zinc telluride) that supports real-time hyperspectral X-ray imaging up to very high energies."

He continues: "Current imaging systems such as spiral CAT scanners do not use all the information contained in the X-ray beam. We can use all the wavelengths present to give a colour X-ray image in a number of different imaging geometries. This method is often called hyperspectral imaging because it gives extra information about the material structure at each voxel (3D equivalent of a pixel) of the 3D image. This extra information can be used to fingerprint the material present at each point in a 3D image."

As well as providing more information about the object being X-rayed, this new technique also decreases the time it takes to create a three dimensional image. Rather than building up lots of separate images (mapping), the new system creates the image in one very simple scanning motion which now only takes several minutes.

This has implications for using the X-ray system for medical purposes, as Professor Cernik explains: "The fact the image can be taken at the same time as using more conventional methods and on the same timescale means more information can be gathered from biopsy samples. This will more accurately differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue types reducing mis-diagnosis."

Professor Cernik is now seeking industrial partners for collaborative projects to refine the X-ray technology for each specific application such as security, aerospace and medical imaging. The team is also close to creating the first colour CT scanner which could dramatically improve diagnosis for a range of conditions or improve security at airports.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? This is K Street on steroids.

South Carolinians will be celebrating President Barack Obama's inauguration with cocktails amid the Hope Diamond and dinosaur fossils at the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History. Minority government contractors will huddle at a downtown restaurant known as a lobbyists' hotspot. And the nation's largest gay rights group is promising a star-studded night at the storied Mayflower Hotel.

And these aren't even officially part of the inaugural.

With ticket costs reaching into five figures for some of these events ? and free for the coveted VIPs, of course ? the sideline events throughout inauguration weekend are the big draws for advocates and lobbyists looking to rub elbows with lawmakers and administration officials. The events at restaurants and hotels, museums and mansions are opportunities for anyone willing to write a check to turn a night out into a chance to build a Rolodex of Washington's powerbrokers.

On the surface, there is nothing nefarious about such celebrations, which are largely sponsored by industry groups or special interests. But access to these movers and shakers is only the swipe of a credit card away; the powerful, similarly, will want to be seen with the right people.

Some groups, such as the State Society of South Carolina, say they simply want to celebrate Obama's next four years in power and sip bubbly while huddled inside the Smithsonian. Others, such as the National Association of Minority Government Contractors, want to highlight their work in Washington ? all while hanging in deep booths at Tuscana West, a restaurant that doubles as the de facto cafeteria for Washington's K Street lobbying corridor. And the Human Rights Campaign is looking to take a victory lap after its gay and lesbian members helped fund and fulfill Obama's re-election.

"The ball is always an excellent opportunity for the people of South Carolina to come together to celebrate the newly elected president and to showcase the beauty, importance and success of our great state," said Robin Muthig, the chair of the South Carolina ball and a former aide to Republican Rep. Gresham Barrett. Muthig started planning the occasion well before a White House winner was declared.

Every four years, these events highlight the booming influence trade in Washington. For a couple hundred dollars, anyone can pay his way into increasingly over-the-top public parties inside some of Washington's favorite destinations. And other invitations allow interest groups to pack hotel ballrooms with people with whom they want to connect.

Take for instance the Indiaspora Ball, highlighting Indian culture. Hosts include Neera Tanden, a former top Obama and Clinton administration policy official who now serves as president of the liberal Center for American Progress; failed congressional hopeful Raj Goyle of Kansas; and Sonal Shah, who worked both for Google's philanthropic arm and Obama's White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation. Tickets to that event at the Mandarin Oriental hotel start at $250, and $1,000 VIP tickets promise "exclusive benefits and special guest access."

Or look to the U.S. Virgin Islands Friendship Inaugural Ball. For $100 guests can mingle with the islands' nonvoting member of Congress, Donna Marie Christensen. Ticket prices climb to $10,000 for "four-star sponsors."

Consider the Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball. Tickets start at $250, and VIP access comes with $2,500 to join music mogul Russell Simmons' gala just five blocks from the National Mall. Or the Peace Ball, with tickets starting at $135 and a guest list that includes Obama's former green jobs czar Van Jones. Or the Green Ball, hosted by Bill Stetson, a member of the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts and husband of Jane Watson Stetson, the Democratic National Committee's finance chairwoman.

These events are separate from the official ceremony at the Capitol on Jan. 21 and its scaled-back, two-ball celebration that evening. Inaugural officials revealed Monday that low-cost, $60 tickets to Obama's inaugural ball were mistakenly put on sale a day early and had sold out. They wouldn't reveal what any other tickets might cost.

Even the official events now allow wide-open corporate money, a reversal from four years ago.

For Obama's first inaugural celebration, there were some 285 events packed with supporters and courters, according to the Sunlight Foundation, a pro-transparency group that tracks such events. So far, the number of this year's events is just a fifth that size, reflecting the dimmed enthusiasm for the second term and the slow-to-recover economy. And unlike four years ago, there is not a raft of lawmakers leaving Congress or state houses to join the Cabinet.

But that isn't to say these parties' place in official Washington has shrunk. With many administration officials eyeing an exit to the private sector and many on the outside looking for a way in, these black-tie events often double as an informal job fair.
