Top 3 marketing approach to boost your online traffic - Web-Hosting ...

The most common way to drive traffic to a website is to properly promote it in different ways. There are many strategies that were developed but only few are remaining that are very much effective and useful to the website.
In the new form of marketing, the competition in every industry has become very complex and unstable due to the continuous changes of search engines on which methods are going to benefit the website in the long run that will not cause penalization.

However, despite the unstable methods of marketing a business or website online, there are still effective approach that have never been ignored by many internet marketers to help and make their business succeed and standout in their market niche and these includes:

SEO - Search Engine Optimization is very popular and a must have strategy online in promoting a website. The future of your website performance in organic search results or SERPs will depend on how competitive and effective the SEO approach you are implementing as this can have a negative result on your website which could last for months.?

The demand of SEO is very popular for many companies as SEO has become the most efficient in marketing a website that can have good results in the long run in just minimal expenses and efforts needed. There are guidelines that you should follow given by search engines for better search rankings and performance of your website.

SEM - Contradict to SEO which is more of organic and free, Search Engine Marketing has become widely known and accepted by many internet marketers and business owners even this method is a form of online advertisements such as: CPC, PPC and CPA. The effectiveness of this approach is definitely beneficial as each visitor coming from online contextual ad is a valid and potential prospect to a website. Unlike in SEO, not all visitors coming from organic search will be converted into clients. However, this method is just quite expensive as this may require a monthly payment to keep your contextual ads remain live and active

SMM - Online marketing does not only cover search engines to generate and drive traffic to a website. Since social media was introduced as an online marketing tool, this has widened the scope of online marketing. The success of social media in establishing online communication was embraced by many marketers to develop and build a strong business. Also, social media platforms like FB, G+, Twitter and LinkedIn can be used as a medium by owners and clients to have a direct contact with each other which is a good start to develop a strong online relationship that could strengthen the business's online presence.

Email Marketing - This method is not quite new to many internet savvy as this is very widely used by many marketers online. However, this will not guarantee the success of business if the online methods that they are using to keep their business grow is email marketing alone may not be enough. The success in email marketing is actually depends on how many contacts you have and how are they related to your industry. If your contacts are not related to your industry, there is no guarantee that you will benefit from them and all your effort could be wasted. So it?s only important that you seek out for only your target audience to avoid being lost in the middle of nowhere.

In a world where everything has become very easy not only for many individuals but also for many companies, online marketing is the best way and convenient for small and huge businesses to marketing their services and increase the opportunity for their business, it is really important that we take advantage of it and use it to success in our industry.

Conn. man arraigned in ex-Patriot's murder case

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) ? An arrested man from former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez's hometown was transferred to Massachusetts on Friday to face a gun charge connected to the murder case against Hernandez while a third suspect surrendered to authorities in Florida.

Carlos Ortiz, who lives in Bristol, Conn., and Ernest Wallace, who walked into a South Florida police station, were the men identified earlier as being with Hernandez and the victim the night of his shooting death, a prosecutor said.

Ortiz was charged with carrying an unlicensed firearm in North Attleborough, where Hernandez lives, on June 17, the day Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was found shot to death near Hernandez's home. Details of the charge weren't released.

Wallace, whose wanted poster was released Thursday night, surrendered in Miramar, Fla., police said. Authorities had been seeking Wallace on a charge of acting as an accessory after Lloyd's murder. Details of that allegation also weren't released.

Police arrested Hernandez on Wednesday at his home and charged him with orchestrating Lloyd's execution-style shooting. Prosecutors said Hernandez orchestrated the killing because Lloyd talked to the wrong people at a nightclub.

Hernandez, Ortiz and Wallace were in a car with Lloyd shortly before his death, Bristol County, Mass., District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter said.

"We now have in custody the three individuals who were in the silver Nissan Altima," Sutter said Friday when Ortiz was arraigned on the gun charge in Attleboro District Court.

All three men have ties to Bristol, Conn.: Hernandez grew up there, Ortiz had been living there, and authorities had conflicting addresses for Wallace there and in Miramar.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty to murder and was denied bail Thursday. Ortiz also was being held without bail pending a court hearing on July 9. Wallace was taken to a jail in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., pending extradition proceedings, police said.

Hernandez's lawyer argued in court that the case is circumstantial. He said Hernandez, who was cut by the Patriots the day he was arrested, wanted to clear his name.

Ortiz's attorney, John Connors, said he will seek bail for his client at the July 9 hearing. He described Ortiz as a "gentle person" and said he will advise Ortiz to plead not guilty.

"I can say that his charge has nothing to do with homicide," Connors said.

Wallace walked into the police station and told officers there was a warrant for his arrest, which officers confirmed by checking a computer database.

"He stated he knew he had a warrant because he saw himself on TV," Miramar police Officer Gil Bueno said. "He was very cooperative. It was uneventful."

An attorney for Wallace, David Meier, told The Boston Globe that his client was visiting his mother and other family members in Miramar when he realized he was wanted in Massachusetts and went to police. Meier said Wallace intends to waive any rendition proceeding and return to Massachusetts "as soon as possible." Meier did not immediately return a telephone message left Friday evening by The Associated Press.

Earlier Friday, Ortiz appeared in Bristol Superior Court in Connecticut, where a judge authorized turning him over to a Massachusetts state trooper and a North Attleborough officer.

A friend and a relative of Ortiz said outside the courthouse that they were stunned by his arrest. They said Ortiz is the devoted father of two girls and a boy, all under the age of 9. Ortiz was unemployed recently but previously worked a long time at a Savers clothing store, they said.

They also said they couldn't believe Ortiz could be part of a murder.

"He's not that type of person. He has a good heart," said friend Milton Montesdeoca, who added he didn't know Hernandez and never heard Ortiz talk about the football star.

Also Friday, authorities said law enforcement officers recovered in Bristol a car Wallace was seen driving before he surrendered.

Meanwhile, Lloyd's relatives were preparing for his funeral in Boston on Saturday. A relative said the service will be at Church of the Holy Spirit in the city's Mattapan section.

Lloyd played for the Boston Bandits and was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee.

Authorities have said trouble that led to Lloyd's killing happened June 14, when Lloyd went with Hernandez to a Boston nightclub. Hernandez became upset when Lloyd began talking with people Hernandez apparently didn't like, prosecutors said.

On June 16, the night before the slaying, a prosecutor said, Hernandez texted two unidentified friends and asked them to hurry to Massachusetts from Connecticut.

A few minutes later, he texted Lloyd to tell him he wanted to get together, prosecutors said. Authorities say the three men picked up Lloyd at around 2:30 a.m. June 17, drove him to an industrial park near Hernandez's home and shot him five times. They have not said who fired the shots.

Prosecutors said an ammunition clip was found in Hernandez's Hummer and matched the caliber of casings found at the scene of Lloyd's killing.

Hernandez was drafted by the Patriots in 2010 and signed a five-year contract worth $40 million last summer. He could face life in prison if convicted.

Extreme weekend heat wave could bring temperatures above 120 to Western US

In Los Angeles, heat-related power failures snarled traffic, and in Death Valley, where temperatures hit triple digits, the forecast is could bring a record 129 degrees. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

Thirty people were taken to hospitals for heat-related injuries and illnesses Friday at a music festival in Las Vegas, authorities said, as a wave of life-threatening blistering temperatures blazed across the West.

Clark County fire personnel treated about 200 people for heat-related nausea, vomiting and fatigue Friday afternoon and evening at the Vans Warped Tour, an eclectic outdoor music festival at the Silverton Casino off the famous Strip.

Most were given water and taken to shaded areas, but 30 had to be taken to hospitals for further treatment, the fire department said.

The high temperature officially hit 117 degrees at Las Vegas-McCarran International Airport ? equaling the airport's record ? on the same day thousands of people streamed to the casino site for the festival.

Records are similarly expected to be broken across the West and the Southwest through the weekend and into next week, the National Weather Service said, thanks to a high pressure "dome" parked over the sprawling region.

Death Valley, Calif., could even top 130 degrees Saturday through Monday, just below the world record high of 134 recorded there on July 10, 1913, The Weather Channel said.

Temperatures in Phoenix are expected to soar between 115 and 120 degrees. In western parts of Arizona, temperatures could reach 125.

Officials in Arizona warned residents to take precautions.

"If you get dizzy or lightheaded, those are some signs of dehydration. If you become confused, that's a real warning sign," Dr. Kevin Reilly of the University of Arizona Department of Emergency Medicine told NBC station KVOA of Tucson.

In Las Vegas, meanwhile, the National Weather Service warned of the potential for a "life-threatening heat event." Temperatures were expected to match those of a July 2005 heat wave when 17 people died in the Las Vegas Valley.

The extreme weather is expected to reach Reno, Nev., reach across Utah and stretch into Wyoming and Idaho, where forecasters are predicting potentially lethal hot spells. Triple-digit temperatures were forecast during Idaho's Special Olympics in Boise.

Matt York / AP

Runners take advantage of lower temperatures at sunrise Thursday in Mesa, Ariz. Excessive heat warnings will continue for much of the Desert Southwest as building high pressure triggers major warming in eastern California, Nevada and Arizona.

Organizers urged coaches to prepare their athletes.

"The basic stuff, wearing breathable, appropriate clothes, staying in the shade as much as possible, staying hydrated is obviously a big thing," Matt Caropino, director of sports and training for Special Olympics Idaho, told NBC station KTVB. "We've put in place some misters that we're going to have at our outdoor venues."

The National Weather Service advised people to keep tabs on signs of potentially lethal heat stroke.

"Heat stroke symptoms include an increase in body temperature, which leads to deliriousness, unconsciousness and red, dry skin," it said in a report. "Death can occur when body temperatures reach or exceed 106-107 degrees."

Los Angeles was forecast to peak between the upper 80s and the lower 90s Saturday as inland communities like Burbank edge toward the low 100s. Palm Springs, Calif., no stranger to steamy summers, may peak at 120 degrees, NBC station KMIR reported. Sweltering heat also is expected for the state's Central Valley, according to The Weather Channel.

While the west remains hot and dry, the east is getting lots of rain that has resulted in flash flooding. Some of the worst flooding was in upstate New York where whole neighborhoods remain under water. ?The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

Commercial airlines were also monitoring conditions because excessive heat can throw flights off course. The atmosphere becomes less dense in extremely high heat humidity, meaning there's less lift for airplanes ? calculations that have to be made individually for every type of aircraft.

Triple-digit heat forced several airlines to bring operations to a halt after Phoenix climbed to 122 degrees in June 1990.

Irish Family Faces Special Education Funding Cuts | Cerebral Palsy

In Swords, Ireland, an important change is about to take place. Due to lack of funding, a 10 percent cut to special education hours is looming before the start of the next school year. Although the percentage may not sound that high, it is likely to have a significant negative impact on families like the Liebenbergs, whose 7-year-old son Finn has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and is non-verbal.

Finn is currently attending a mainstream school, a feat that he was able to achieve two years ago through his own determination and that of his mother, Alicia, and his resource teacher. He is a bright boy who has to try harder than most children to learn due to his physical limitations, but he has benefitted immensely from being in a typical classroom with others his age. It is something that would not be possible without the assistance of his full-time resource teacher, Alicia says. Finn?s entry into the mainstream classroom was not without some bumps, and it was his resource teacher who realized first what the problem was and how to correct it. She is their liaison with the educational psychologists, speech therapists, and other specialists who are needed to help Finn make the most of his time in school. Alicia worries that when his resource teacher?s hours are cut, she will be unable to fully help Finn as she has been doing.

As she says, ?It?s easy to say on a piece of paper that we are cutting resource hours across the board, it?s not going to affect anybody. But it?s not just a few kids that have a little problem with learning, it?s a lot of kids that really rely on resource teachers to enable them to stay in mainstream and to stay up to date with their work and get a proper education.?

The Liebenbergs, and other parents in their situation, will doubtless advocate for their children while hoping to get the cuts reversed so that they have one less daily battle to fight. Unfortunately, for the near future at least, the cuts are going to be defining their son?s school experience.

A Father's Genetic Quest Pays Off

Hugh Rienhoff and daughter

Hugh Rienhoff prepared his daughter?s DNA for sequencing at home using second-hand equipment. Image: Colston Rienhoff

  • Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

Hugh Rienhoff says that his nine-year-old daughter, Bea, is ?a fire cracker?, ?a tomboy? and ?a very sassy, impudent girl?. But in a forthcoming research paper, he uses rather different terms, describing her hypertelorism (wide spacing between the eyes) and bifid uvula (a cleft in the tissue that hangs from the back of the palate). Both are probably features of a genetic syndrome that Rienhoff has obsessed over since soon after Bea?s birth in 2003. Unable to put on much muscle mass, Bea wears braces on her skinny legs to steady her on her curled feet. She is otherwise healthy, but Rienhoff has long worried that his daughter?s condition might come with serious heart problems.

Rienhoff, a biotech entrepreneur in San Carlos, California, who had trained as a clinical geneticist in the 1980s, went from doctor to doctor looking for a diagnosis. He bought lab equipment so that he could study his daughter?s DNA himself ? and in the process, he became a symbol for the do-it-yourself biology movement, and a trailblazer in using DNA technologies to diagnose a rare disease (see Nature 449, 773?776; 2007).

?Talk about personal genomics,? says Gary?Schroth, a research and development director at the genome-sequencing company Illumina in San Diego, California, who has helped Rienhoff in his search for clues. ?It doesn?t get any more personal than trying to figure out what?s wrong with your own kid.?

Now nearly a decade into his quest, Rienhoff has arrived at an answer. Through the partial-genome sequencing of his entire family, he and a group of collaborators have found a mutation in the gene that encodes transforming growth factor-?3 (TGF-?3). Genes in the TGF-? pathway control embryogenesis, cell differentiation and cell death, and mutations in several related genes have been associated with Marfan syndrome and Loeys?Dietz syndrome, both of which have symptomatic overlap with Bea?s condition. The mutation, which has not been connected to any disease before, seems to be responsible for Bea?s clinical features, according to a paper to be published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics.

Hal Dietz, a clinician at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, where Rienhoff trained as a geneticist, isn?t surprised that the genetic culprit is in this pathway. ?The overwhelming early hypothesis was that this was related,? says Dietz, who co-discovered Loeys?Dietz syndrome in 2005.

Rienhoff had long been tapping experts such as Dietz for assistance. In 2005, an examination at Johns Hopkins revealed Bea?s bifid uvula. This feature, combined with others, suggested Loeys?Dietz syndrome, which is caused by mutations in TGF-? receptors. But physicians found none of the known mutations after sequencing these genes individually. This was a relief: Loeys?Dietz is associated with devastating cardiovascular complications and an average life span of 26 years.

In 2008, Jay Flatley, chief executive of Illumina, offered Rienhoff the chance to sequence Bea?s transcriptome ? all of the RNA expressed by a sample of her cells ? along with those of her parents and her two brothers. After drilling into the data, Rienhoff and his collaborators found that Bea had inherited from each parent a defective-looking copy of CPNE1, a poorly studied gene that seems to encode a membrane protein. It looked like the answer.

But questions remained. The gene did not have obvious connections to Bea?s features, and publicly available genome data suggests that the CPNE1 mutations are present in about 1?in?1,000?people ? an indication that there should be many more people like Bea.

PFT: Ex-Brown Walcott pleads not guilty

Adam JonesAP

Adam Jones is willing, and eager to tell anyone who will listen he?s not the same man who was once known as Pacman.

But that doesn?t mean he?s a finished product.

The NFL didn?t flinch from having him come to the Rookie Symposium as a speaker after his June 10 arrest for misdemeanor assault for an incident outside a bar, and Jones said that it?s evidence that maturity is not a one-step process.

During an interview with FOXSports.com?s Alex Marvez and Jim Miller on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Jones called that incident ?one hiccup.?

?Me being confronted or touched with a particular object, that?s an area I have to work on,? Jones said. ?If it had been anything else, I probably would have walked away. But when I?m being physically touched ?

?Nothing happens overnight. I?ve made a lot of changes. I don?t go out to the places I used to. I don?t hang with the people I used to hang with. The only thing I can control is what I?m doing in the community. Being a great father at home. My fianc?e is very happy. I?m good with my teammates. I?m not out getting drunk all through the night. I?m not out at 3 or 4 in the morning. If you recall, the incident happened at 10:15. I didn?t have a drink. The young lady that was in the party was drinking.?

Of course, learning to step away from potentially dangerous situations is exactly the kind of thing the league?s trying to teach its rookies this week.

Jones said he mostly avoids his hometown of Atlanta, where too many friends and family members still refer to him by his old nickname.

?It?s not that I can?t handle it. But the crowd I used to hang with, they?re still doing the same things and don?t have anything to lose,? Jones said. ?When I was hanging with them and doing the things they were doing, there was nobody there to tell me, ?No, Pac. You shouldn?t go in the strip club tonight. No, Pac. It isn?t cool that you want to fight that dude.? With time, you grow. . . .

?Everybody when I?m in Atlanta wants to come to my house to get in the pool and drink liquor. I?m not with that. The last time I went home there was no liquor at my house. If you are coming over here, don?t bring liquor ? period. But people have to live and learn and want to do better. I?m a true believer in that.?

Jones has a powerful message to share. If he can put his words into practice, and stay out of the headlines for the wrong reasons, the message gains strength.

Making hydrogenation greener: Using iron as catalyst for widely used chemical process, replacing heavy metals

June 27, 2013 ? Researchers from McGill University, RIKEN (The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Wako, Japan) and the Institute for Molecular Science (Okazaki, Japan) have discovered a way to make the widely used chemical process of hydrogenation more environmentally friendly -- and less expensive.

Hydrogenation is a chemical process used in a wide range of industrial applications, from food products, such as margarine, to petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. The process typically involves the use of heavy metals, such as palladium or platinum, to catalyze the chemical reaction. While these metals are very efficient catalysts, they are also non-renewable, costly, and subject to sharp price fluctuations on international markets.

Because these metals are also toxic, even in small quantities, they also raise environmental and safety concerns. Pharmaceutical companies, for example, must use expensive purification methods to limit residual levels of these elements in pharmaceutical products. Iron, by contrast, is both naturally abundant and far less toxic than heavy metals.

Previous work by other researchers has shown that iron nanoparticles -- tiny pieces of metallic iron -- can be used to activate the hydrogenation reaction. Iron, however, has a well-known drawback: it rusts in the presence of oxygen or water. When rusted, iron nanoparticles stop acting as hydrogenation catalysts. This problem, which occurs with so much as trace quantities of water, has prevented iron nanoparticles from being used in industry.

In research published today in the journal Green Chemistry, scientists from McGill, RIKEN, and the Institute for Molecular Science report that they have found a way to overcome this limitation, making iron an active catalyst in water-ethanol mixtures containing up to 90% water.

The key to this new method is to produce the particles directly inside a polymer matrix, composed of amphiphilic polymers based on polystyrene and polyethylene glycol. The polymer acts as a wrapping film that protects the iron surface from rusting in the presence of water, while allowing the reactants to reach the water and react.

This innovation enabled the researchers to use iron nanoparticles as catalyst in a flow system, raising the possibility that iron could be used to replace platinum-series metals for hydrogenation under industrial conditions.

"Our research is now focused on achieving a better understanding of how the polymers are protecting the surface of the iron from water, while at the same time allowing the iron to interact with the substrate," says Audrey Moores, an assistant professor of chemistry at McGill and co-corresponding author of the paper.

The results stem from an ongoing collaboration between McGill and RIKEN, one of Japan's largest scientific research organizations, in the fields of nanotechnology and green chemistry. Lead author Reuben Hudson, a doctoral student at McGill, worked on the project at the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science and at the Institute for Molecular Science in Japan. Co-authors of the paper are Prof. Chao-Jun Li of McGill, Dr. Go Hamasaka and Dr. Takao Osako of the Institute for Molecular Science, Dr. Yoichi M.A. Yamada of Riken and Prof. Yasuhiro Uozumi of Riken and the Institute for Molecular Science.

"The approach we have developed through this collaboration could lead to more sustainable industrial processes," says Prof. Uozumi. "This technique provides a system in which the reaction can happen over and over with the same small amount of a catalytic material, and it enables it to take place in almost pure water -- the green solvent par excellence."

Funding for the research was provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Canada Research Chairs, the Fonds de recherche du Qu?bec -- Nature et technologies, the Riken-McGill Fund, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

US unemployment benefit applications fall to 346K

(AP) ? The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 346,000 last week, evidence that the job market is still improving modestly, despite signs of slower growth.

The four-week average, a less volatile figure, declined 2,750 to 345,750, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's near the five-year low of 338,000 that the average touched last month.

Applications are a proxy for layoffs. Since March, they have fluctuated between 340,000 and 360,000, a level consistent with steady hiring. Employers added 175,000 jobs in May, almost matching the average monthly gain for the past year. The unemployment rate was 7.6 percent, down from 8.2 percent a year earlier.

Steady job gains could help the economy expand later this year. Growth was only 1.8 percent at an annual rate in the first quarter, the government said Wednesday, down from a previous estimate of 2.4 percent.

The main reason for the lower estimate was consumers spent less than previously thought.

A separate report Thursday showed that consumer spending rose 0.3 percent in May, after falling by the same amount in April. Incomes rose 0.5 percent, the most in three months, the Commerce Department said.

Still, the report revised spending lower in several months earlier this year, causing some economists to lower their forecasts for the April-June quarter.

Nearly 4.6 million people received unemployment benefits in the week ended June 8, the latest data available. That's about 23,000 more than in the previous week.

Slower growth could mean the Federal Reserve may delay its plans to slow its monthly bond purchases, economists said. Those purchases are intended to keep long-term interest rates low.

Chairman Ben Bernanke rattled financial markets last week when he said the Fed would slow its purchases if the economy continued to strengthen. But the Fed may not be able to follow through until growth accelerates from the first quarter's pace. Some economists think that may not happen until the final three months of the year.

Some economic reports this week have been encouraging. U.S. factories are fielding more orders. Higher home sales and prices are signaling a steady housing recovery.

Spending at retail businesses rose in May, a sign that solid job growth has encouraged Americans to open their wallets. And the improving job market has lifted consumer confidence to its highest point in 5? years.

Hubble snaps ?the Penguin? and its egg-shaped companion

NASA, ESA, Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)

The Hubble Space Telescope?s latest portrait of deep space reveals two galaxies interacting in a scene reminiscent of a penguin safeguarding its egg. But the placid pair ? collectively called Arp 142 ? actually bears the scars of a destructive past. The galaxy NGC 2936 (top) was once a spiral like the Milky Way, until the gravitational pull from the egg-shaped galaxy NGC 2937 (bottom) warped it into avian form. Remnants of NGC 2936?s spiral arms radiate out from the bird?s eye, which once formed the galaxy?s core. The system lies 326 million light-years away in the constellation Hydra.

Obama to tout economic impact of immigration

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will convene a meeting of CEOs and business leaders to tout what the White House says are the economic benefits of a landmark immigration bill.

The afternoon meeting is scheduled just hours before the Senate holds a key test vote on a border security amendment. The measure could help the bill garner more Republican support.

Obama is expected to highlight new estimates about the bill's impact on the national deficit. The Congressional Budget Office says the bill would reduce the deficit by about $200 billion over the next 10 years and by about $700 billion over the following decade.

The bill would provide a pathway to citizenship for many of the 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally.

High Speed Footage Reveals an AK-47 Works Even Better Under Water

The AK-47 can be considered the Timex watch of the gun world. It takes a licking, and keeps on ticking, except that by ticking we of course mean firing round after round of ammunition. The automatic machine gun is based on a gas recoil system that uses the hot expanding gases of a bullet being fired to automatically rechamber the next round, and surprisingly, it appears to work even better under water.

The folks at Smarter Every Day sunk an AK-47 in an aquarium and, using a high-speed camera, they discovered that the weapon happily still fires while under water. Not only that, it actually reloads itself faster, because H2O can't be compressed. But while the weapon appears to operate more efficiently while submerged, the bullets are also slowed, so unfortunately it's considerably less lethal for hunting mermaids and sharks.

Religion plays irreplaceable role in society, Archbishop Lori says ...

This is a syndicated post from CNA Daily News. [Read the original article...]

Baltimore, Md., Jun 22, 2013 / 10:06 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Opening the 2013 Fortnight for Freedom, Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore emphasized the unique contribution that religion brings to society, warning that it must be protected and allowed to flourish.

?Faith enriches public life not only by the magnitude of its services but by the qualities of mind and heart, by the values and virtues, it brings to the task,? said Archbishop Lori.

He warned that while religious organizations and individuals provide vital services for the common good, ?our government is taking from what belongs to God by state-sponsored attempts to force the Church to compromise her own teachings as the price to be paid for serving the wider community.?

Archbishop Lori, who chairs the U.S. Bishops? Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, delivered the homily at a June 21 Mass at the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the nation?s oldest Cathedral, in downtown Baltimore, Md.

The cathedral was packed with members of the faithful who had come from both Maryland and from other states across the country to attend the opening Mass of the Fortnight for Freedom. They welcomed the archbishop?s homily with a standing ovation.

The Fortnight for Freedom ? currently in its second year ? is a two-week period of prayer, education and action for a greater respect for religious liberty both in the U.S. and abroad.

Growing threats to religious freedom prompted the U.S. bishops to call for the first Fortnight for Freedom last year. Among these threats is the upcoming Aug. 1 deadline when religious organizations must comply with the controversial HHS mandate, which requires employers to facilitate insurance coverage for contraception, sterilization and some drugs that can cause early abortions, even if such cooperation violates their firmly-held religious beliefs.

Other religious liberty concerns raised in past months include attempts to redefine marriage and threats to freedom of religious activity in the realms of health care, humanitarian aid and immigration.

Archbishop Lori explained that ?the Church does not have two wings: a ?faith and worship? division on the one hand, and a ?service? division on the other.? Rather, he said, ?what we believe and how we worship gives rise to public service.?

Acts of service such as education, health care and aid to the poor are not a separate branch of the Catholic faith, he stressed, but ?these activities are part of our baptismal DNA as Catholic Christians.?

?No wonder we shudder, no wonder we react so strongly, when governmental authority tries to slice and dice our Church by separating in law and policy our houses of worship from our charitable, healthcare and educational institutions on the score that the latter are somehow less religious than our churches.?

In the attempt to impose various restrictions on faith-based action and belief, ?Caesar is taking from what belongs to God,? Archbishop Lori said.

In its infringements on religious freedom, ?our government is not only taking what belongs to God; it is also taking from what belongs to human dignity and the common good,? he continued.

?For by imperiling religious freedom, all human rights are put at risk.?

The archbishop explained that rights such as ?the right to life, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly ? are linked, and these rights are not granted to us by the State but by the Creator.?

Faith is a source of values that lead to deeds which benefit the common good, he stated.

?Through faith we understand that every person is called to share God?s life,? Archbishop Lori observed. ?Through faith we see more readily what a truly just and humane society should be and we receive the strength we need to build a true civilization of truth and love.?

Therefore, he stressed, religious belief benefits the public square ?not only by the sheer magnitude of the humanitarian services it offers but by its witness to Christ Jesus, its witness to those moral truths and values without which democracy cannot flourish.?

The archbishop also explained that the maintenance of religious freedom is important not only to Christians in America, but to all believers of all faiths across the entire globe.

?We continue to live in an age of martyrs ? when believers, not just Christians, are being persecuted for professing and practicing their faith ? when believers are tortured and killed because they are believers, in places like Iran, Iraq, China and Nigeria.?

?Let us keep the flame of faith and the flame of freedom burning brightly not only for our children and our children?s children,? Archbishop Lori entreated, ?but also for the sake of these persecuted believers who see in our form of government and in our great land a beacon of hope.?

This Tiny $99 Android Game Console Is Meant To ... - Business Insider

ouya console

Ouya

SAN FRANCISCO, (Reuters) - Ouya's $99 Android videogame console goes on sale on Tuesday, the latest attempt by a growing crop of niche hardware makers to chip away at a market dominated by Sony Corp, Microsoft Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd.

Ouya hopes its cheaper cube-shaped console will prevail over the long-established gaming triumvirate's pricier hardware. The new device has more than 150 free-to-try games, media features such as Flixster and radio service TuneIn, and an open ecosystem built on Google's Android operating system.

Founded by Julie Uhrman, a former executive at entertainment website IGN, the hackable, or customizable, device will go up this Christmas season against the $399 PlayStation 4 and $499 Xbox One. Both are packed with exclusive blockbuster titles from top developers, cloud gaming and other social features .

Ouya is going after core console gamers, as well as the mass market of college students, young adults and families that plays mobile games and is price-conscious, Uhrman said.

"Ouya is not an 'either-or' decision," Uhrman said. "It stands on its own and it's something that gamers are going to want in addition to whatever device plays the game that they've been playing for the last five years."

Ouya and other hardware companies, big and small, are hoping to claw their way into a global video games market expected to touch $66 billion in software and hardware sales this year, up from $63 billion in 2012, according to research firm DFC Intelligence.

The 2013 holiday season is shaping up to be the most hotly contested in years, with Microsoft launching its Xbox One and Sony's Playstation 4 coming to market.

Saratoga, California-based BlueStacks, will launch a $129 cube called GamePop that is expected to available this holiday season. Alternatively, gamers can pay $6.99 monthly for access to over 500 games and get the console and controller for free.

Next week, graphics giant Nvidia Corp will release its handheld Shield device, which runs games available on Android tablets and smartphones and streams titles from computers.

Demand for the new gadgets is unclear. Ouya has begun taking pre-orders, but is mum about figures. Just this week, Nvidia cut the price of the Shield, which starts sales on June 27, to $299 from $349, responding to what it called feedback from gamers.

"For a new product, we're satisfied with the reservation," Paul Raines, CEO of the world's largest games retail chain, GameStop, said about the Ouya.

But he added: "To really grow to billions of dollars, you've got have great IP that people want to play. People often talk about open platform gaming, but there's only one device that plays 'Halo' and that will be Xbox One, there's one device that plays 'Uncharted' and that will be the PlayStation 4, so the importance of the IP cannot be overstated."

DEVELOPER INTEREST

Ouya has received support from the gaming community. It racked up $8.6 million from 63,000 backers, mostly game enthusiasts and developers, on crowd-funding site Kickstarter. And it got $15 million in a funding round led by venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, with participation from the Mayfield Fund, Shasta Ventures, Occam Partners and Nvidia.

Developers can earn revenue on Ouya's platform through several avenues, including selling virtual goods, subscriptions and donations. Sales will be split along the traditional 70-30 model, with Ouya getting 30 percent.

Over 17,000 developers are using the Ouya software development kit to bring games to the new device, including Square Enix Holdings Co Ltd's "Final Fantasy III" and nWay's "ChronoBlade", the company said.

Nvidia's Shield is intended for hard core PC gamers with a yen for continuing to play on the go.

Meanwhile, BlueStacks will target a younger demographic of 10 to 30 year-olds hooked on tablet and smartphone games, said Apu Kumar, senior vice president of global sales and business development, said.

Its GamePop is "bringing the games you are most familiar with on iPhones and Android to the large screen," he said.

Are Dogs 'Kids?': Owner-dog relationships share striking similarities to parent-child relationships

June 21, 2013 ? People have an innate need to establish close relationships with other people. But this natural bonding behaviour is not confined to humans: many animals also seem to need relationships with others of their kind. For domesticated animals the situation is even more complex and pets may enter deep relationships not only with conspecifics but also with their owners. Scientists at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni Vienna) have investigated the bond between dogs and their owners and have found striking similarities to the parent-child relationship in humans.

Their findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Domestic dogs have been closely associated with humans for about 15,000 years. The animals are so well adapted to living with human beings that in many cases the owner replaces conspecifics and assumes the role of the dog's main social partner. The relationship between pet owners and dogs turns out to be highly similar to the deep connection between young children and their parents.

The importance of the owner to the dog

One aspect of the bond between humans and dogs is the so-called "secure base effect." This effect is also found in parent-child bonding: human infants use their caregivers as a secure base when it comes to interacting with the environment. Until recently the "secure base effect" had not been well examined in dogs. Lisa Horn from the Vetmeduni's Messerli Research Institute therefore decided to take a closer look at the behaviour of dogs and their owners. She examined the dogs' reactions under three different conditions: "absent owner," "silent owner" and "encouraging owner." The dogs could earn a food reward, by manipulating interactive dog toys. Surprisingly, they seemed much less keen on working for food, when their caregivers were not there than when they were. Whether an owner additionally encouraged the dog during the task or remained silent, had little influence on the animal's level of motivation.

When the owner is replaced by a stranger

In a follow-up experiment, Horn and her colleagues replaced the owner with an unfamiliar person. The scientists observed that dogs hardly interacted with the strangers and were not much more interested in trying to get the food reward than when this person was not there. The dogs were much more motivated only when their owner was present. The researchers concluded that the owner's presence is important for the animal to behave in a confident manner.

Why do adult dogs behave like human children?

The study provides the first evidence for the similarity between the "secure base effect" found in dog-owner and child-caregiver relationships. This striking parallel will be further investigated in direct comparative studies on dogs and children. As Horn says, "One of the things that really surprised us is, that adult dogs behave towards their caregivers like human children do. It will be really interesting to try to find out how this behaviour evolved in the dogs with direct comparisons."
