Out With the Old: 10 Mesmerizing Demolition GIFs

Out With the Old: 10 Mesmerizing Demolition GIFs

We tend to think of demolition as destructive: dynamite, dust, and plenty of fireworks. But as a New York Times article recently described, demolition in dense cities is, more and more often, a "stealth" operation, where a building is dismantled over a number of weeks.

The article describes the slow demolition of Tokyo's 40-story Akasaka Hotel, which was taken apart, piece by piece, at a rate of two stories every ten days. The building was built in 1982 by Kenzo Tange, a venerable modernist who is much-loved by historians and architects?part of the reason why the stealth demolition seemed like a good idea. ?We want people not to really see the demolition work," the development manager told the NYT. ?The noise level is 20 decibels lower than the conventional way, and there?s 90 percent less dust leaving the area.?

Stealth aside, there are plenty of old-school demolitions still happening in the world, for better or worse (check out the 300-pounds-of-dynamite job that took place earlier this year in El Paso, below). After Architizer rounded up some of the best last week, we thought we'd add a few of our own favorites to the mix. There are dozens of great videos and GIFs out there, though, so post your own in the comments, below.

How 3D Printing Can Build New Bone

Damaged bones could be fixed with a new technique that involves 3D printing a tissue using living stem cells.

For example, if a child had a jawbone defect, you could take an image of the defect, feed it into a computer and print a replacement to precisely fill the defect using the patient's own cells, said Kevin Shakeshaff, a pharmacist at the University of Nottingham in England.

"The tissues of our body are structured at the level of single cells," Shakeshaff said. "Using 3D printing, we can position cells in precise places."

The technology, which enables scientists to create a custom-fitted body part, is on display at the Royal Society?s annual Summer Science Exhibition this week in London.? [7 Cool Uses of 3D Printing in Medicine]

To create the bone replacement, the 3D bioprinter creates a scaffold in the shape of the bone, and coats it with adult human stem cells, which are capable of developing into many different tissue types.

The printer's "ink" consists of a polymer called polylactic acid and a gel-like substance called alginate. The polylactic acid provides the hard, mechanical strength of bone, while the alginate acts as a cushioning material for the cells.

The printed product can be implanted in the body, where the scaffold will degrade and be replaced by new bone within about three months.

"The first advantage is you get something in the exact shape of the defect you're trying to replace," Shakeshaff said. "More subtly, you have the ability to organize where the cells go within the scaffold," he said, adding that it leads to better blood vessel formation and ultimately better bone formation.

Previously, Shakeshaff and his colleagues developed a method of replacing bone by injecting a material that solidifies inside the body without damaging cells. Surgeons can use this as a quick fix for filling an injury. But the new 3D printing technique may offer a better solution.

At the exhibition, the team is also showing off a technique for manipulating stem cells using "laser tweezers." In the technique, two laser beams are crossed, creating an attractive force. The lasers can then pick up cells and move them around with unprecedented precision. By manipulating cells in this way, the researchers hope to understand the precise cell movements within developing human embryos.

Ultimately, these techniques may help scientists build fully functional replacements for bones or organs. The 3D printing method may be clinically available within a decade, Shakeshaff said, and the same technique could also be applied to repair more complex tissues, such as the liver or heart.

Visitors to the exhibition can try out the new techniques themselves: picking up cells using the laser tweezers, sculpting the biomaterials into structures such as veins or arteries, and printing 3D scaffolds shaped like skulls and other bones.

The Royal Society hosts the Summer Science Exhibition every year to display advanced science and engineering research from throughout the United Kingdom.

Yankees 3B Rodriguez set for 1st minor league game

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is set to play Tuesday night in his first minor league game on a rehabilitation assignment.

Rodriguez said he felt fine and was eager to get going.

"Awesome," he said Monday at the Yankees' spring training complex. "I'm really excited."

Rodriguez said he didn't have a timetable for rejoining the Yankees.

The Yankees said Rodriguez is scheduled to start for Single-A Charleston in the South Atlantic League. Rodriguez is supposed to play at least three innings against Rome during the game in South Carolina.

Rodriguez has been working out in Florida this year while recovering from surgery on his left hip on Jan. 16. The three-time AL MVP turns 38 later this month.

Many rehabbing Yankees play for the minor league team in Tampa, but lately the weather has been rainy. The inclement forecast prompted the Yankees to have Rodriguez start with Charleston.

Rodriguez walked out of the camp carrying an equipment bag while a clubhouse assistant brought a box of bats. They put them in Rodriguez's car, and he signed several autographs before driving off.

Rodriguez has 647 career home runs. The Yankees have struggled this season while Rodriguez and several other stars have been on the disabled list.

NOTES: SS Derek Jeter (ankle) ran the bases for the first time during his recent recovery. ... OF Curtis Granderson (broken finger) put on a glove and caught easy flyballs.

Regular light bulbs use a lot of energy which forces people to spend more on power bills. To make your home green, remove all of these bulbs and replace them with the fluorescent ones. Fluorescent bulbs basically use ? amount of electricity when compared to the regular ones. It?s expensive to install them but they last longer. This allows you to save money which benefits you in the long run.

? Replace Shower Heads

The high ? flow shower heads, found in most houses, usually waste a lot of water. They also use more energy which consequently wastes more money. To curb this situation, go for the low-flow option. Replace all showers in the house with low-flow heads to regulate water flow efficiently. Wastage will be minimized thus enabling you to save.

? Unplug Unused Electronic Devices

All risks of short-circuiting or harm caused by power surges will be prevented. Make it a habit of unplugging all devices immediately after using them.

? Opt for Solar Power

Solar energy is efficient and cost-effective. Although it?s a bit expensive to install the panels, you?ll be amazed by just how much the power bill will drastically drop as a result. It?s advisable to purchase the panels one by one until you have the required number for the power needs in your home. This way, you?ll not feel the financial pressure at all.

? Conduct Energy Tests

A lot of energy is usually wasted through the air conditioning system as it escapes without serving its intended purpose. To avoid this, contact an electrician so that energy tests can be conducted in your home. This way, you?ll be able to know the specific areas that are causing the wastage, especially during winter and summer seasons. You can then add insulation in your home to increase efficiency.

Top 3 marketing approach to boost your online traffic - Web-Hosting ...

The most common way to drive traffic to a website is to properly promote it in different ways. There are many strategies that were developed but only few are remaining that are very much effective and useful to the website.
In the new form of marketing, the competition in every industry has become very complex and unstable due to the continuous changes of search engines on which methods are going to benefit the website in the long run that will not cause penalization.

However, despite the unstable methods of marketing a business or website online, there are still effective approach that have never been ignored by many internet marketers to help and make their business succeed and standout in their market niche and these includes:

SEO - Search Engine Optimization is very popular and a must have strategy online in promoting a website. The future of your website performance in organic search results or SERPs will depend on how competitive and effective the SEO approach you are implementing as this can have a negative result on your website which could last for months.?

The demand of SEO is very popular for many companies as SEO has become the most efficient in marketing a website that can have good results in the long run in just minimal expenses and efforts needed. There are guidelines that you should follow given by search engines for better search rankings and performance of your website.

SEM - Contradict to SEO which is more of organic and free, Search Engine Marketing has become widely known and accepted by many internet marketers and business owners even this method is a form of online advertisements such as: CPC, PPC and CPA. The effectiveness of this approach is definitely beneficial as each visitor coming from online contextual ad is a valid and potential prospect to a website. Unlike in SEO, not all visitors coming from organic search will be converted into clients. However, this method is just quite expensive as this may require a monthly payment to keep your contextual ads remain live and active

SMM - Online marketing does not only cover search engines to generate and drive traffic to a website. Since social media was introduced as an online marketing tool, this has widened the scope of online marketing. The success of social media in establishing online communication was embraced by many marketers to develop and build a strong business. Also, social media platforms like FB, G+, Twitter and LinkedIn can be used as a medium by owners and clients to have a direct contact with each other which is a good start to develop a strong online relationship that could strengthen the business's online presence.

Email Marketing - This method is not quite new to many internet savvy as this is very widely used by many marketers online. However, this will not guarantee the success of business if the online methods that they are using to keep their business grow is email marketing alone may not be enough. The success in email marketing is actually depends on how many contacts you have and how are they related to your industry. If your contacts are not related to your industry, there is no guarantee that you will benefit from them and all your effort could be wasted. So it?s only important that you seek out for only your target audience to avoid being lost in the middle of nowhere.

In a world where everything has become very easy not only for many individuals but also for many companies, online marketing is the best way and convenient for small and huge businesses to marketing their services and increase the opportunity for their business, it is really important that we take advantage of it and use it to success in our industry.

Conn. man arraigned in ex-Patriot's murder case

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) ? An arrested man from former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez's hometown was transferred to Massachusetts on Friday to face a gun charge connected to the murder case against Hernandez while a third suspect surrendered to authorities in Florida.

Carlos Ortiz, who lives in Bristol, Conn., and Ernest Wallace, who walked into a South Florida police station, were the men identified earlier as being with Hernandez and the victim the night of his shooting death, a prosecutor said.

Ortiz was charged with carrying an unlicensed firearm in North Attleborough, where Hernandez lives, on June 17, the day Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was found shot to death near Hernandez's home. Details of the charge weren't released.

Wallace, whose wanted poster was released Thursday night, surrendered in Miramar, Fla., police said. Authorities had been seeking Wallace on a charge of acting as an accessory after Lloyd's murder. Details of that allegation also weren't released.

Police arrested Hernandez on Wednesday at his home and charged him with orchestrating Lloyd's execution-style shooting. Prosecutors said Hernandez orchestrated the killing because Lloyd talked to the wrong people at a nightclub.

Hernandez, Ortiz and Wallace were in a car with Lloyd shortly before his death, Bristol County, Mass., District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter said.

"We now have in custody the three individuals who were in the silver Nissan Altima," Sutter said Friday when Ortiz was arraigned on the gun charge in Attleboro District Court.

All three men have ties to Bristol, Conn.: Hernandez grew up there, Ortiz had been living there, and authorities had conflicting addresses for Wallace there and in Miramar.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty to murder and was denied bail Thursday. Ortiz also was being held without bail pending a court hearing on July 9. Wallace was taken to a jail in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., pending extradition proceedings, police said.

Hernandez's lawyer argued in court that the case is circumstantial. He said Hernandez, who was cut by the Patriots the day he was arrested, wanted to clear his name.

Ortiz's attorney, John Connors, said he will seek bail for his client at the July 9 hearing. He described Ortiz as a "gentle person" and said he will advise Ortiz to plead not guilty.

"I can say that his charge has nothing to do with homicide," Connors said.

Wallace walked into the police station and told officers there was a warrant for his arrest, which officers confirmed by checking a computer database.

"He stated he knew he had a warrant because he saw himself on TV," Miramar police Officer Gil Bueno said. "He was very cooperative. It was uneventful."

An attorney for Wallace, David Meier, told The Boston Globe that his client was visiting his mother and other family members in Miramar when he realized he was wanted in Massachusetts and went to police. Meier said Wallace intends to waive any rendition proceeding and return to Massachusetts "as soon as possible." Meier did not immediately return a telephone message left Friday evening by The Associated Press.

Earlier Friday, Ortiz appeared in Bristol Superior Court in Connecticut, where a judge authorized turning him over to a Massachusetts state trooper and a North Attleborough officer.

A friend and a relative of Ortiz said outside the courthouse that they were stunned by his arrest. They said Ortiz is the devoted father of two girls and a boy, all under the age of 9. Ortiz was unemployed recently but previously worked a long time at a Savers clothing store, they said.

They also said they couldn't believe Ortiz could be part of a murder.

"He's not that type of person. He has a good heart," said friend Milton Montesdeoca, who added he didn't know Hernandez and never heard Ortiz talk about the football star.

Also Friday, authorities said law enforcement officers recovered in Bristol a car Wallace was seen driving before he surrendered.

Meanwhile, Lloyd's relatives were preparing for his funeral in Boston on Saturday. A relative said the service will be at Church of the Holy Spirit in the city's Mattapan section.

Lloyd played for the Boston Bandits and was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee.

Authorities have said trouble that led to Lloyd's killing happened June 14, when Lloyd went with Hernandez to a Boston nightclub. Hernandez became upset when Lloyd began talking with people Hernandez apparently didn't like, prosecutors said.

On June 16, the night before the slaying, a prosecutor said, Hernandez texted two unidentified friends and asked them to hurry to Massachusetts from Connecticut.

A few minutes later, he texted Lloyd to tell him he wanted to get together, prosecutors said. Authorities say the three men picked up Lloyd at around 2:30 a.m. June 17, drove him to an industrial park near Hernandez's home and shot him five times. They have not said who fired the shots.

Prosecutors said an ammunition clip was found in Hernandez's Hummer and matched the caliber of casings found at the scene of Lloyd's killing.

Hernandez was drafted by the Patriots in 2010 and signed a five-year contract worth $40 million last summer. He could face life in prison if convicted.
