OAKLAND, Calif. -- Kobe Bryant had 34 points and 10 rebounds, Steve Nash finished with 12 points and nine assists in his first game in almost two months, and the Los Angeles Lakers rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Golden State Warriors 118-115 in overtime on Saturday night.
Metta World Peace and Nash each made a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minutes of regulation before the Warriors came back. World Peace scored 20 points, and Nash converted a step-back shot for the final points in overtime to lift Los Angeles to its fourth straight victory.
Jarrett Jack scored 29 points and David Lee had 20 points and 11 rebounds in a disappointing collapse for Golden State, which had won 11 of 14 games to get off to its best start in 20 years. As so often has happened in this one-sided California rivalry, the Lakers took over when it mattered most.
The 38-year-old Nash missed the previous 24 games because of a small fracture in his lower left leg. He was injured in the second game of the season, the former Phoenix star's first with the Lakers.
Los Angeles' rejuvenated point guard showed no signs of rust in the crucial moments.
Nash's 3-pointer gave the Lakers a 103-102 lead with a little less than 2 minutes left in regulation. Festus Ezeli answered with an alley-oop from Jack to put the Warriors back ahead, only to watch Bryant swish a pull-up jumper from 20 feet on the other end.
After Lee's jumper gave Golden State the lead again, World Peace made a corner 3 to put Los Angeles ahead 108-106 with 24.1 seconds remaining. Jack followed with a tying, step-back shot, and the Lakers took over with 14.9 seconds left before Bryant missed a jumper over two defenders at the buzzer.
Bryant made three quick jumpers in overtime, including a fadeaway that left him pumping his fist near the Warriors bench, to put Los Angeles ahead by four. He has scored at least 30 points in eight straight games.
After Curry's 3-pointer trimmed the Lakers' lead to one, Nash's step-back shot in the paint over Curry extended Los Angeles' cushion again. Curry missed a potential tying 3-pointer before Los Angeles grabbed the rebound ? and the game.
The Lakers had handed Golden State its most lopsided-loss of the season on Nov. 9, a 101-77 rout in Los Angeles. In the past two months, the Lakers had continued to slide while the Warriors had become surprising winners.
The matchup Saturday marked the first time the Warriors faced the Lakers with a better record through at least 25 games since April 23, 1994.
Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said before the game that Nash's return could be a fresh start for the franchise, especially with more difficult matchups looming, including a showdown against the New York Knicks (19-7) on Christmas. He said the lineup with Nash is what he had envisioned when the Lakers called him in November to replace Mike Brown, who was fired after a 1-4 start to his second season.
With Nash anchoring D'Antoni's fast-paced system, the Lakers still had no problem settling in offensively.
They scored 15 points off 10 turnovers in the opening quarter to take a 31-27 lead. Dwight Howard was in foul trouble throughout, and the center's absence hurt Los Angeles on the other end, with the Warriors moving in and around the paint almost unchallenged.
At one point, Jack juked Nash and every other defender Los Angeles threw his way. He scored 15 points in the second quarter, sparking a 14-0 run that helped put Golden State ahead 61-53 at halftime.
The up-and-down pace had everybody winded. Curry had to ask coach Mark Jackson to come out for a moment in the third quarter as Golden State played its fourth game in five nights. After a brief rest, Curry keyed another surge to give the Warriors an 88-74 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Bryant practically willed the Lakers back by himself as he has done so often in his illustrious career. He finished an alley-oop from Nash on the next play with two hands, sliced Golden State's lead to 90-88 when he dunked after a give-and-go bounce pass from Howard midway through the fourth, and tied the game at 95 with a 3-pointer in the face of Harrison Barnes minutes later to set up the frantic finish.
NOTES: Darius Morris started at shooting guard for the Lakers ahead of World Peace. D'Antoni said he likes World Peace's energy off the bench, but he will still make some starts depending on the matchup. ... The Lakers have swept the Warriors in three of the last four seasons, including all four during the 2011-12 campaign. They have two more games against each other this season. ... Carl Landry's put-back layup at the halftime buzzer was waved off after officials reviewed television replays.

It?s been a rough week for news. 26 people, 20 of them children, were murdered in a school in Connecticut by a gunman whose profile sounds all too familiar? an isolated young white man. There may actually be action on gun control after this latest horror.
My focus isn?t this terrible event itself, though along with the rest of the country, I?m gutted by it and send love and sympathy to the bereaved. I want instead to comment on a seemingly insignificant aspect of the response and suggest that it taps into something troubling.
Overwhelmingly, comment has centered on how ?parents everywhere? are devastated. True, of course. But I am not a parent and I don?t want to see children murdered either. The whole exercise of empathy or compassion, it seems to me, requires the moral and imaginative leap of putting oneself in others? shoes?shoes of a different size, made of other materials, made for feet unlike my own.
Over and over in the U.S., I hear ?Speaking as a single mom? or ?As an African-American playwright? or ?As a person struggling with X?? The claim to authority comes from lived experience, and that?s reasonable.
But what about UNlived experience? What is art and literature for? I may need to be (say) a Latina to fully grasp how society positions me as such? but is it a requirement of empathy? To imagine life otherwise? Shouldn?t I at least try to do the imperfect work of imagination and empathy? If it?s only parents who can imagine the pain of parents? if it?s only other white women can imagine my tribulations in trying to be staged on equal terms with white male playwrights? in short, if one can only imagine one?s own demographic, that isn?t empathy at all. It?s a form of projected narcissism.
I think there is a connection between the shriveling of arts education in schools and the language of identity politics, when shorn of social complexity and used as short-hand. We need to make a better case for what art and art-making can offer, beyond the twin traps that not-for-profit ?mission? thinking often springs?the instrumental and the uplifting. That line of argument says that art is USEFUL because it improves grades, earns $, etc. Or, that there is a moral purpose to art delivered through theme and content (UPLIFTING). Both arguments degrade a core value of art, which is to extend imagination and push us to see (and create) the world differently.
This is the radical potential of art: Things could be otherwise. If you believe that, and you believe that you can approach another?s experience (however imperfectly) then both change, and human connection, are possible because they are conceivable. And hope leads to better places than despair.
Be the first to like this.

Most died at the very start of their young lives, tiny victims taken in a way not fit for anyone. Others found their life's work in sheltering the little ones, teaching them, caring for them as their own. President Barack Obama joined hundreds gathered in Newtown, Conn., in a vigil to remember the 20 young students and six adults who were killed.
Here are some images from the vigil and in the town that was the scene of the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

You don?t say if your dog is going in the cabin with you or traveling as baggage. But I suggest you try Thundershirt, which provides a gentle, constant pressure that has a great calming effect for most dogs, especially any time a dog may be anxious, fearful or over-excited. Thundershirt boasts an 80 percent success rate and offers a 100% money back guarantee ? so, what do you have to lose? Founder Phil Blizzard says he?s seen ?terrific? results for in-cabin pets wearing a Thundershirt and suggests combining a sedative with a Thundershirt for dogs traveling as baggage.
Personally, I don?t recommend sedating dogs. Many airlines will not accept a sedated dog for travel. For an objective opinion, I checked in with Ariana Luchsinger, a trainer and behavior consultant at Pets Unlimited in San Francisco, who specializes in anxiety and phobias. She?s used anxiety wraps, in particular Thundershirt, with both homed and sheltered dogs. She says the effectiveness of this acupressure-based calming method is, like most behavior modification tools, dependent upon the dog and context. ?In many instances, I have seen an observable decrease in fear responses triggered by acute auditory stimuli and some limited results for generalized anxiety outdoors,? Luchsinger wrote in an email.
?That being said, on an airplane and especially if the dog is ?stowed,? I would question the efficacy of a wrap in a dog with previous history of anxiety symptoms. Overall, I would place anxiety wraps in the category of ?can't hurt, could help? with limited exposure to the fear-inducing stimuli."

BEIRUT (AP) ? An Islamist faction of Syrian rebels says its fighters have taken control of an infantry base in the northern city of Aleppo.
A statement by the al-Tawheed Brigade says the rebels, fighting to topple President Bashar Assad, "fully liberated" the military facility in Syria's largest city on Saturday.
Al-Tawheed Brigade is one of the largest rebel groups operating in Aleppo, which has been a major front in the civil war since July.
The statement was posted on al-Tawheed's official website on Sunday. It said the brigade's commander was killed in the battle for the base, which is the second major military installation in Aleppo the rebels overran in a week.

Dec. 9, 2012 ? A European research team has published the results of a 30-year study of an extraordinary hypergiant star. They have found that the surface temperature of the super-luminous star HR 8752 increased by about 3000 degrees in less than three decades, while it went through an extremely rare stage called the 'Yellow Evolutionary Void'. The discovery marks an important step closer to unravelling the evolution of the most massive stars.
A team of astronomers from six European countries, including the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB), has investigated the hypergiant star HR 8752 for 30 years while it traversed the 'Yellow Evolutionary Void'. The 'Void' is a short stage in the lives of the most massive stars when they become very unstable. The team finds that the surface temperature of HR 8752 rose surprisingly fast from 5000 to 8000 degrees in less than 30 years. The research results were very recently published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. The discovery is an important step forward to resolve the enigma of the hypergiants, the most luminous and massive stars of the Galaxy.
Hypergiants can shine millions of times brighter than the Sun, and they often have a diameter several hundred times greater. HR 8752 is a quarter million times more luminous than the Sun. The powerhouse is therefore visible with normal binoculars at large distance from Earth in the Northern constellation of Cassiopeia. There are currently only 12 hypergiants known in our Galaxy.
The 'Yellow Evolutionary Void' is a unique stage in the short life of a hypergiant when its temperature and luminosity can quickly change. The team has discovered that the atmospheres are very unstable inside the Void because outwardly directed forces act equal or sometimes even stronger than the force of gravity. Due to the unstable atmosphere, hypergiants lose tremendous weight in this 'forbidden zone', which can sometimes amount to the mass of the Sun in a year. When a hypergiant enters the 'Evolutionary Void' the star tries to it leave as quickly as possible. That is why almost all hypergiants are found outside the Void.
The team finds that HR 8752 is a very rare hypergiant which has partly traversed the Void. The changes of its atmosphere were closely monitored with regular observations over 30 years.
Alex Lobel, co-author of the study and ROB scientist explains that "HR 8752 was around 1980 identical to the eruptive hypergiant Rho Cas of spectral type F, but then the temperature of HR 8752's atmosphere rapidly increased by 3000 degrees and now shows the spectral properties of a hotter A-type star. We are baffled about the tremendous changes of HR 8752 in that period of time."
Between 1900 and 1980 the atmospheric temperature of HR 8752 stayed almost constant around 5000 degrees, but it rose very rapidly to 8000 degrees between 1985 and 2005. The team calculates that the stellar radius decreased from 750 to 400 times that of the Sun. In 1985 the team embarked on a long-term spectroscopic observing program when it found that the remarkable hypergiant was exactly at the border of the 'Yellow Void' and started to cross over. "HR 8752 had to struggle through the Void which has changed the physical properties of its atmosphere," Lobel adds.
The team further demonstrates that the Void actually consists of two parts in which the atmosphere of the hypergiant is unstable. They result from ionization of large amounts of hydrogen and helium gas in the atmosphere, divided by a small zone around 8000 degrees where it becomes more stable.
The fate of HR 8752 is currently unclear but there are strong hints that these massive hypergiants may perish in a powerful supernova explosion. Or they quickly traverse the Void and transform into a hotter type of erratic stars known as the "Luminous Blue Variables." In either case that will not pass unnoticed according to Kees de Jager and Hans Nieuwenhuijzen, the astronomers of the Netherlands Institute for Space Research in Utrecht who directed the research of HR 8752 over the past three decades.
The discovery is an important new step for explaining the existence of these extreme stars. A number of other hypergiants with similar spectacular properties is expected to exist in the Milky Way. The search for these remarkable stars with dramatic changes over human timescales has just begun, but has been forever put on track.

For many shoppers, organic doesn't always mean better, a new study finds.
In fact, many people react negatively to such foods, and both positive and negative impressions of organic foods are based partly on the personal values of a consumer, researchers at Cornell University and the University of Michigan discovered.
The two-part study found that some conditions produce a bad impression of organic labels among shoppers, due to the consumers' values.
"Our data suggest when organic practices do not appeal to a consumer's values, they expect organic food to taste worse," said Jonathon Schuldt, Cornell assistant professor of communication.
In the first part of the study, researchers asked 215 students whether they thought organic food was healthier and tastier than conventional food. While most agreed that organics were a healthier choice, fewer expected the food to taste good by comparison to non-organic options. The research shows this was especially true for students who had low concern for the environment.
"The personal values of the rater mattered," Schuldt said.
In the second part of the study, researchers had 156 participants read one of two versions of a fake news article discussing a drink. The story described the development of a drink product designed to relieve the symptoms of African children suffering from severe malnutrition. In one version, the drink was described as organic every time it was mentioned, while the other version never mentioned the word organic.
The results showed that those people who were highly pro-environment judged the organic version of the drink to be less effective compared with the non-organic version [MD1]?.
Schuldt said the results serve as a reminder that the halo effect, a phenomenon in which a label leads consumers to have a positive opinion of the product, hinges on the values of each shopper.
"It's not the case that you can label a food organic and expect that everyone will perceive it more positively," he said. "Under certain circumstances, ethical labels could have an unintended backfire effect."
Schuldt said future research should involve taste tests of organic and conventional foods to see if personal values influence a consumer's perceptions when actually eating the food.
The study, which was co-authored by Michigan student Mary Hannahan, was recently published online in the journal Appetite.

Dec. 9, 2012 ? Wellcome Trust researchers have discovered how the brain assesses confidence in its decisions. The findings explain why some people have better insight into their choices than others.
Throughout life, we're constantly evaluating our options and making decisions based on the information we have available. How confident we are in those decisions has clear consequences. For example, investment bankers have to be confident that they're making the right choice when deciding where to put their clients' money.
Researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL led by Professor Ray Dolan have pinpointed the specific areas of the brain that interact to compute both the value of the choices we have in front of us and our confidence in those choices, giving us the ability to know what we want.
The team used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure activity in the brains of twenty hungry volunteers while they made choices between food items that they would later eat. To determine the subjective value of the snack options, the participants were asked to indicate how much they would be willing to pay for each snack. Then after making their choice, they were asked to report how confident they were that they had made the right decision and selected the best snack.
It has previously been shown that a region at the front of the brain, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, is important for working out the value of decision options. The new findings reveal that the level of activity in this area is also linked to the level of confidence participants placed on choosing the best option. The study also shows that the interaction between this area of the brain and an adjacent area reflects participants' ability to access and report their level of confidence in their choices.
Dr Steve Fleming, a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow now based at New York University, explains: "We found that people's confidence varied from decision to decision. While we knew where to look for signals of value computation, it was very interesting to also observe neural signals of confidence in the same brain region."
Dr Benedetto De Martino, a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow at UCL, added: "Overall, we think our results provide an initial account both of how people make choices, and also their insight into the decision process."

ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2012) ? Adding the drug trastuzumab to chemotherapy prevents cancer recurrence and improves survival in a large number of women with early stage HER2-positive breast cancer. But trastuzumab does not stop tumors from returning in about 25 percent of patients -- and oncologists haven't been able to identify these women before treatment. This situation may soon change, according to a Mayo Clinic study being presented at the 2012 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
A team of U.S. researchers, led by oncologists at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida, have discovered 27 genes that are significantly associated with a good outcome with concurrent use of trastuzumab and chemotherapy, as well as five other genes linked to a poor outcome using the same treatment regimen.
Results of their study -- believed to be the first to use gene expression profiling to predict outcome to trastuzumab as part of adjuvant breast cancer therapy -- offer a number of future potential benefits, says Edith Perez, M.D., deputy director at large of the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and director of the Breast Cancer Translational Genomics Program at Mayo Clinic.
"These findings also are getting us closer to unraveling the biological factors that are relevant to patient outcome, which will help us improve clinical care," Dr. Perez says.
For example, the discovery may help scientists devise a genetic test that can help oncologists select the best treatment for their HER2-positive patients, she says.
Further analysis will illuminate the inner biological workings of individual HER2-positive tumors, which could provide clues for novel treatments, Dr. Perez adds. The researchers have already found that the genes linked to outcome can be grouped into different categories that affect tumor functioning, such as cell cycle, cell death, cell receptor signaling, and gene transcription.
Dr. Perez and her team plan to validate their findings through collaborations with researchers in the United States and Europe who have led other trastuzumab clinical studies.
"We are on our way to developing a predictive test that can define the right treatment for individual patients, and that is very exciting," she says.
The study was funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute and Mayo Clinic, with further support from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the 26.2 with Donna Foundation. The N9831 clinical trial was conducted by the North Central Cancer Treatment Group, now part of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. Dr. Perez is a group vice chair for the Alliance.
The study's co-authors include researchers from Mayo Clinic's campuses in Florida, Minnesota and Arizona, Indiana University, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the University of Washington, and Ventana Medical Systems-Roche in Tucson, Ariz.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7, 2012 ? Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta has briefed President Barack Obama on Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey?s recommendations about general/flag officer ethics, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said today.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff presented two initial findings that Panetta took to the White House earlier this week.
Dempsey sent the secretary some initial findings ?informed as a result of his year-long effort to renew the U.S. military?s commitment to the profession of arms,? Little told reporters.
The findings are part of the review of general and flag officer ethics training. As part of this effort, Panetta asked Dempsey to work with the Joint Chiefs to determine how to better foster a culture of stewardship among senior U.S. military leaders.
The first finding is that while there is appropriate ethics training in place for senior leaders, ?we need to start earlier and reinforce that training more frequently in an officer?s career,? Little said. Ethics training is a part of each service?s professional military education from initial entry training to general/flag officer education.
?Second, General Dempsey believes we must look at the level and type of support senior leaders receive in the execution of their duties to ensure it is necessary, and to ensure we are being consistent, sensible and efficient,? Little said.
The chairman?s intent is to direct consistency of support across the general officer/flag officer cadre and to determine whether it is appropriate, the press secretary said.
?What we?re talking about here is the personnel infrastructure surrounding general and flag officers,? Little said. There are different types of support that general and flag officers receive. For example, generals in command have an aide-de-camp, which is one level of support. They often have additional staff to help with more routine activities.
Little said the findings are an initial set of recommendations, and part of a long-term effort by the chairman.
?The secretary fully supports what Chairman Dempsey has done over the last year with respect to the profession of arms and this is going to be an on-going dialogue inside the Joint Chiefs and services,? Little said. ?We will see an evolution of discussion and potential actions depending on what General Dempsey, the chiefs and the secretary decide going forward.?
Little said Dempsey has not reached conclusions on ethics training or support to senior military officers.
?The secretary is committed to giving the chairman and the chiefs the space they need to come forward with recommendations and to take actions on their own that may be appropriate for ethics for general and flag officers,? the press secretary said.
Panetta strongly believes the vast majority of general and flag officers behave in a manner consistent with the highest standards of conduct, Little said.

While some developers have recently gone towards a philosophy of making a bunch of smaller releases and dropping them on the App Store quickly, German developer Fishlabs has done the opposite. It's focused on one huge game, Galaxy on Fire 2, and spent the last year expanding and perfecting it. The app is on iOS, and it's just a brilliant game for the iPad, if you haven't seen it yet.
Galaxy on Fire 2 HD is also available on the Mac, and Fishlabs' hard work is evident from the beginning. As you can see above, the graphics are phenomenal. What you'll get is open-world space exploration, combat and trading game, with a huge galaxy to explore, a large story to play through, and plenty of things to do, from full combat missions to simply flying around the galaxy and trading or exploring. This game's been polished and re-polished and then some. As an original title on the Mac App Store, it doesn't get much better than this.
The one issue I have is in the voice acting. Some of it can be a little wooden, and because the developer is European, the accents are a little strange. But that's just a small caveat. If you haven't played this one yet, and especially if you have a big bright MacBook or a new iMac to play it on, definitely pick up Galaxy on Fire 2 HD. It's on the Mac App Store for $9.99.

After a lengthy search, Sony and Escape Artists have found a helmer for their Denzel Washington starrer "The Equalizer," as "Drive" director Nicolas Winding Refn is in early talks to tackle a feature adaptation of the 1980s TV show.
At this point, Refn has only received an offer, with negotiations expected to start shortly. Should the deal close, Refn will have landed one of the more sought-after directing gigs in town.
Richard Wenk penned the script, which follows a former covert operations officer who hates injustice and fights for those who can't. Created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim, the original TV series starred Edward Woodward.
Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch will produce for Escape Artists along with Alex Siskin, Mace Neufeld, Tony Eldridge, Michael Sloan and Washington. David Bloomfield will serve as an exec producer.
Andrea Giannetti and Hannah Minghella are overseeing for Sony, which aims to start production in late spring of 2013.
Sony has long been high on the potential franchise, which would be the first for Washington, whose films have consistently performed well at the box office. Par's "Flight" has already grossed $82 million domestically on a budget of only $31 million.
The search for a director took longer than initially expected, as Washington had to consider several candidates in the midst of his awards season commitments, though Refn had long been deemed the frontrunner for the coveted job.
Sony hopes Refn brings the same edge to the project seen in his previous films "Bronson" and "Drive." Another element that may have helped Refn land the gig: studio is looking to make the film at a moderate budget of around $50 million-$60 million, and Refn has proven he can deliver a quality movie under a tight budget. "Drive" was budgeted at $15 million and brought in more than $70 million worldwide.
Refn is currently in post on the FilmDistrict thriller "Only God Forgives," starring Ryan Gosling. He's repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Independent Talent Group.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A tour bus driver who prosecutors said was all but asleep at the wheel was acquitted Friday of manslaughter and negligent homicide in a crash last year that killed 15 gamblers on their way from a Connecticut casino to New York City.
Ophadell Williams was found guilty on one count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Williams wept and covered his face with his hands as the verdict was read. On the count which he was found guilty, the judge sentenced him to 30 days in prison, which he has served. He also was ordered to pay a fee of $500.
Williams argued throughout the trial that he had been awake and alert, and said the crash was not the result of reckless behavior or extreme exhaustion. He said a tractor-trailer cut him off, causing him to swerve and hit a guardrail. But investigators could find no indication that had occurred.
His lawyer had said he was wracked with guilt over the crash ? but not guilty of manslaughter.
"It happened as a motor vehicle accident, not as some crime," said Williams' lawyer, Patrick Bruno. "He tried to avoid tragedy, and tragedy occurred."
The defendant left the courthouse without speaking. His lawyer said Williams just wanted to go home and relax with his family.
"He had great faith that he would be vindicated," Bruno said outside court. "He said, 'Thank you so much. I knew that they would do the right thing.' ... His wife and sister hugged and kissed me and said, 'Thank you. This is the greatest Christmas and birthday gift of all.'"
Bronx Assistant District Attorney Gary Weil had alleged Williams was so sleep deprived from working another job during the day that it affected his reflexes the same as if he were intoxicated behind the wheel. He said Williams knew the risks, but drove anyway.
The trial lasted more than eight weeks, with Superstorm Sandy causing a delay. Juror deliberated about a week, but not consecutively.
The March 12, 2011, crash happened on Interstate 95 at daybreak as Williams was ferrying a busload of gamblers to Manhattan's Chinatown from the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Conn. The bus crashed just feet from a road sign that read: "Welcome to the Bronx."
The bus struck a guard rail, toppled over and hit a signpost that tore open the top before skittering to a stop.
The victims were mostly Chinese men and women over the age of 40 who were regulars at casinos. About half died. The others were injured. Survivors missing limbs testified in court, including Ren Xiang Yao who spoke of how he lost both arms when he raised them up instinctively when the bus crashed. He said he didn't see the crash ? though he remembers when the rescue crews arrived.
"I used all the energy I had left and said, 'I'm here, I'm here, please come rescue me,' "he said. "By the time I woke up, I was already in the hospital."
Yao was hospitalized for nearly a month and had several operations.
Jurors also watched video from the scene of the accident and other wounded passengers who testified the bus was unsteady in the moments before it crashed.
Williams had been held in Rikers Island because his family couldn't post $250,000 bail. He faced a maximum of 7? years to 15 years in prison.
The National Transportation Safety Board said in June that the accident was probably caused by driver fatigue, and a bus company that provided too little safety oversight. It stopped short of saying Williams had fallen asleep.
Williams worked for World Wide Tours of Greater New York. Federal regulators shut down the bus operator after the accident for safety violations. Williams had not turned in any driver's logs while working for the company as required by federal safety regulations, yet World Wide took no action, federal investigators said.
But the bus company won't face any criminal charges related to the crash, Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson has said.
New York state has stepped up inspections of tour buses since the crash. Dozens of buses have been taken out of service after police found problems with logbooks, licenses or equipment. But there have been several bus accidents since.

Lance Armstrong, meanwhile, can hold onto his bronze medal from the 2000 Sydney Games for a little while longer.
The International Olympic Committee executive board disqualified four athletes whose Athens doping samples were retested earlier this year and came back positive for steroids, including shot put gold medalist Yuriy Bilonog of Ukraine.
RECOMMENDED: Best Olympic moments for women
Also stripped were hammer throw silver medalist Ivan Tskikhan of Belarus and two bronze medalists ? women's shot putter Svetlana Krivelyova of Russia and discus thrower Irina Yatchenko of Belarus.
The case of a fifth bronze medalist, weightlifter Oleg Perepechenov of Russia, remains pending.
"Athletes who cheat by using doping substances must understand that just because they get away with it one day, there is a very good chance that they will be caught in the future," WADA President John Fahey said in a statement. "The retesting and subsequent decisions of the IOC are proof of that."
The IOC said it will ask the International Association of Athletics Federations to get the four medals back and readjust the results and rankings from the Athens Games.
Until then, no decision will be taken on reallocating the medals. Adam Nelson of the United States finished second in the shot put in Athens behind Bilonog and would stand to move up to gold.
The IOC, meanwhile, held off stripping Armstrong of the bronze he won 12 years ago in the cycling road time trial in Sydney, citing procedural reasons for the delay.
IOC leaders want the medal back following the damning U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report that painted Armstrong as a systematic drug cheat and led to him being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles from 1999-2005.
But the IOC said it must wait for cycling's governing body UCI to formally notify Armstrong of the loss of all his results since August 1998. The IOC wants to avoid any legal problems in connection with the eight-year statute of limitations in the Olympic rules.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A month after the bitterly fought election, President Barack Obama has his highest approval ratings since the killing of Osama bin Laden, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll, and more Americans say the nation is heading in the right direction now than at any time since the start of his first term.
Obama's approval rating stands at 57 percent, the highest since May 2011, when U.S. Navy SEALs killed the terror leader, and up 5 percentage points from before the election. And 42 percent say the country is on the right track, up from 35 percent in January 2009.
A majority think it's likely that the president will be able to improve the economy in his second term.
"Compared to the alternative, I'm more optimistic about government and the economy with him in office," said Jack Reinholt, an independent from Bristol, R.I., who backed Obama in 2008 and again in 2012. "I feel he has the better path laid out."
Still, four years of partisan conflict in Washington have taken a toll on the president's image.
"I'm less enthusiastic about him than the first time he was elected," Reinholt added.
Americans are divided on what kind of president Obama has been, with 37 percent saying he's been above average or outstanding and 36 percent describing his tenure as below average or poor. Another quarter say he's been just average.
Obama held much stronger numbers on this measure at the start of his first term, with two-thirds expecting an above-average presidency. And the public's take on Obama's relative performance has bounced back and forth over his four years in office, moving higher following the death of bin Laden, after declining in the summer of 2010, a few months before the GOP took back control of the House.
Looking ahead to Obama's final four years, most Americans doubt he can reduce the federal budget deficit. But almost 7 in 10 say he will be able to implement the health care law passed in March 2010 and remove most troops from Afghanistan. And most think he'll be able to improve the economy and boost race relations in his final term, though both those figures are down significantly from January 2009.
About a quarter say the economy is in good shape in the new poll, similar to pre-election poll results, but optimism about the economy has dipped since before the election. In October, 52 percent of Americans said they expected the economy to get better in the next year; now, that stands at 40 percent. Among Republicans, the share saying the economy will improve in the coming year has dropped sharply since before the election, from 42 percent in October to 16 percent now.
"The economy, if left alone, will gradually improve because of our people wanting to better themselves and make more money," said Bobby Jordan, 76, a Romney voter from Green Valley, Ariz. "They're going to be doing things to improve their own position, which will collectively mean the economy will gradually get a little better. But (Obama's) not doing anything to improve the economy."
Overall, the public gives Democrats the advantage on handling the economy, 45 percent saying they trust the president's party to do a better job on it, 39 percent favoring Republicans.
As Obama took office four years ago, Republicans were mostly optimistic about his chances for improving the economy, with nearly 7 in 10 saying it was likely the new president could improve it in his first four years in office. Now, just 21 percent of Republicans feel the next four years are that promising. Independents, too, have grown skeptical about Obama's ability to turn around the economy. About three-quarters thought he could fix it in 2009; just a third do now.
Those sharp partisan divides in expectations are represented in the president's approval ratings. About 9 in 10 Democrats say they approve of the way Obama is handling his job, compared with just 2 in 10 Republicans. That gap approaches the 82-point partisan gap in George W. Bush's approval ratings according to Gallup polling in December 2004.
The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Nov. 29-Dec. 3 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,002 adults nationwide. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points; it is larger for subgroups.

As promised, the latest update for one of our favorite Android keyboard has arrived. This time, there's a new input method that feels a little familiar, with text entry done by dragging your finger across the on-screen keys. SwiftKey's still trying to keep your spacebar interaction to a minimum, with its new 'flow through space' feature. This lets you glide down to the bar and back to writing without interrupting your missive. The new system still works in tandem with SwiftKey's predictive voodoo, meaning as your finger loops around the screen (followed by a multicolored streamer), the keyboard app should be able to figure out what you meant to type, although the prediction only works for so long -- we'd advise clipping your swipes to a handful of words at a time, as major mistakes can upset lengthy sentences.
We've been playing with it over the last week and the keyboard still learns your lexicon by poring over your internet profile, still connecting to Gmail, Twitter, RSS feeds and your SMS history. The more typical touch keyboard is still available and in comparison, we've found it's taking us a little longer to get up to speed on the new method. However, it's notably zippier if you're one of those rare one-handed typists. If you're willing to give the beta a try, you can sign up for Swiftkey's VIP program -- which already totals over 75,000 important people -- to grab the early APK.

No matter what?s for dinner tonight, yes, you would like fries with that. But they?re not going to be soggy, greasy, or pumped full of enough sodium to bloat you like a puffer fish.
These alterna-fries, made from veggies you won?t find at a drive-thru, are simple. Start by slicing sticks measuring roughly a half-inch by 3 inches. Then follow the instructions below and bake in a preheated 425?F oven.
Zucchini fries
In a small bowl, whisk an egg. In another bowl, mix ? cup breadcrumbs with one teaspoon of Italian seasoning. Dunk sticks in egg, then breadcrumbs to coat. Bake for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through, until crispy.
Serve with: Marinara sauce
Butternut fries
Before you slice your butternut, peel it. Coat fry sticks with a little olive oil and salt in a bowl, lay on a baking sheet, and bake for about 30 minutes, turning halfway through, or until the edges start to look brown. For a spicier version, sprinkle a little cayenne, too, before you bake.
Serve with: Maple syrup mixed with mayonnaise in equal parts (trust me here)
Carrot fries
Two ingredients! And not just for bunnies. Sprinkle with salt, lay on a baking sheet, and bake for about 30 minutes, turning halfway through.
Serve with: Ranch

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2012) ? Astronomers have found the youngest still-forming solar system yet seen, an infant star surrounded by a swirling disk of dust and gas more than 450 light-years from Earth in the constellation Taurus.
The star currently has about one-fifth the mass of the Sun, but, the scientists say, will likely pull in material from its surroundings to eventually match the Sun's mass. The disk surrounding the young star contains at least enough mass to make seven Jupiters, the largest planet in our Solar System.
"This very young object has all the elements of a solar system in the making," said John Tobin, of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Tobin and his colleagues used the Submillimeter Array and the Combined Array for Millimeter-wave Astronomy to study the object, called L1527 IRS, residing in a stellar nursery called the Taurus Cloud.
The nascent solar system is no more than 300,000 years old, compared to the 4.6-billion-year age of our Sun and its planets. "It may be even younger, depending on how fast it accumulated mass in the past," Tobin explained.
The young star is one of the closest examples of the earliest stage of star formation. The astronomers used the millimeter-wave observatories to detect both dust and carbon monoxide around the object. They were the first observers to conclusively show that the young star is surrounded by a rotating disk of material, and the first to be able to measure the mass of the protostar itself.
By measuring the Doppler shift of radio waves coming from carbon monoxide in the disk, they were able to show that the rotation speed in the disk changes with the material's distance from the star in the same fashion that the orbital speeds of planets change with distance from the Sun.
This pattern, called Keplerian rotation, "marks one of the first essential steps toward forming planets, because the disk is supported by its own rotation, will mediate the flow of material onto the protostar and allow the planet formation process to begin," said Hsin-Fang Chiang of the University of Illinois and the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii.
"This is the youngest protostar found thus far to show that characteristic in a surrounding disk," Tobin said. "In many ways, this system looks much like we think our own Solar System looked when it was very young," he added. Previous observations from the Gemini Observatory suggested the presence of a large disk surrounding the protostar. This motivated Tobin and his team to pursue high-resolution millimeter-wave observations, confirming the presence of the disk and measuring its rotation.
The astronomers have received approval to improve their understanding of L1527 IRS by making high-precision observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international telescope system nearing completion at high elevation in northern Chile.
"ALMA's advanced capabilities will allow us to study more such objects at greater distances," Tobin said. "With ALMA, we will be able to learn more about how the disks form and how quickly the young stars grow to their full size, and gain a much better understanding of how stars and their planetary systems begin their lives," he added.

Facebook today announced that it's opening up Facebook Messenger to folks who don't actually use Facebook. Going forward, all you'll need to use the Messenger app is a name and phone number, and you'll be able to hit up your mobile contacts. The obvious play is to get non-Facebook users to stick a toe into the water -- and not into the pools of cross-platform competitors such as Whatsapp. Whether the Facebook name remains too much of a deterrent, we'll just have to see.
Facebook says an update to the Android client should be rolling out today (it's not live as of this writing).

NEW BATAAN, Philippines ? The death toll from a powerful typhoon in the southern Philippines climbed to more than 200 people Wednesday and officials feared many more bodies could be found as rescuers reach hard-hit areas that had been isolated by landslides, floods and downed communications.
At least 151 people have died in the worst-hit province of Compostela Valley since Typhoon Bopha began lashing the region early Tuesday, including 66 villagers and soldiers who perished in a flash flood that swamped two emergency shelters and a military camp in New Bataan town, provincial spokeswoman Fe Maestre told The Associated Press.
About 80 people survived the deluge in New Bataan with injuries, but an unspecified number of villagers remain missing. On Wednesday, the farming town of 45,000 people was a muddy wasteland of collapsed houses and columns of coconut and banana trees felled by Bopha's ferocious winds.
Army Maj. Gen. Ariel Bernardo said 51 people died and 98 others are missing in nearby Davao Oriental province.
Disaster-response agencies reported seven other typhoon-related deaths elsewhere.
