You may still be sneaking the kids Halloween candy, but the truth is that the holidays will be here before you know it. Our own extended family is already making plans for the holidays, and my husband and I are already making travel arrangements for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If your family is also hitting the highway for the holidays, in all the hustle and bustle, don?t forget to make sure you?re making arrangements for your home as well. This time of year is a popular one for thieves to strike while families are away. Here?s a few tips to keep your home safe while you?re away from home for the holidays.
?
Secure Your Home
Living in a small, rural town I admit my own family is sometimes lax on home security. While we?re in town we sometimes forget to lock up in our daily rush, but if you live in a more urban area, or are going to be gone for extended periods of time, it?s always wise to make sure everything is locked up tight. Make sure doors and windows are all secure, and if locks are not functional, it might be time to replace. ?If you?re handy with tools you may be able to update and install home locks on your own, otherwise contact a?Newton Locksmith?or one in your hometown for assistance.

Cancel or Reroute Deliveries
Being a blogger, we get packages almost daily. Leaving packages, mail or newspapers outside where they?re visible can be a dead giveaway to thieves that no one is home. If you?re going to be gone for an extended period of time it?s always good to make arrangements. I love UPS my choice for holding or rerouting deliveries, and you can also have your post office and newspaper hold your mail and paper until you return. If you have neighbors you trust, it never hurts to have them check on things and bring in any unexpected deliveries as well.
?
Use a Timer
To help give the appearance you?re home, purchase an inexpensive timer to turn on and off various lights that can be visible from the outside.
Don?t Forget Your Four Legged Friends
While you?re making plans for holiday festivities, don?t forget to make holiday plans for your furry companions as well. Whether you?re taking them with you, using a kennel, or hiring a house sitter, it?s important to make sure you?ve got your pets planned for in your holiday arrangements.
?
Keep Quiet on Social Media
If you?re headed out of town for the holidays, don?t brag about it or post dates on Facebook, Twitter or elsewhere. Doing so can be an open invitation to thieves to stop on by while you?re gone. It also never hurts to double check and protect your privacy settings to make sure some of your personal data like address or home phone on your profiles is not visible except to those you authorize. After all those Facebook friends you haven?t seen since High School may have developed some illegal new past times since you hung out last at graduation.
?
Consider a House Sitter
It never hurts to have someone you trust check on your home while you?re gone. Whether they stop in every few days, or stay there while you?re gone, it can be reassuring to have someone check on things and keeping your home safe. Give them a list of normal happenings like trash collection and mail delivery, and also emergency contact information. They can also assist with turning lights on and off and giving the appearance you?re home.

Safe travels and happy holidays!
